Video of Mercedes-Benz BlueZero Eectric Concept Vehicles

Mercedes-Benz is showing the way ahead in environmentally responsible electromobility by presenting its near-series Concept BlueZERO at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Based on a single vehicle architecture, this intelligent, modular concept allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility.

  • The BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone.
  • The BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive
  • The BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

Mercedes-Benz to showcase ‘BlueZero’ low emission concepts in Detroit

Auto-motor-und-sport, Germans finest auto magazine, is reporting that Mercedes-Benz will be showcasing three new concepts at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The three concepts are called “BlueZero” and will highlight Mercedes’ commitment for low or no emission vehicles in the near future. The first concept is the BlueZero E-Cell, an all electric concept vehicle, which will be equipped with lithium ion batteries to provide a range of 100km or 62 miles on a 2 hour charge.

The second vehicle is the BlueZero F-Cell, which is a hydrogen fuel-cell power concept. Last but not least, is the BlueZero E-Plus, which essentially is a plug-in hybrid, kind of like the Chevy Volt. It will have a 3 cylinder engine, found in the current smart fortwo, but also a lithium ion battery. The small engine will start recharging the battery once it’s used, giving the diver a 600 km or 373 miles range on one fuel of tank.

The concepts might tell exactly what the future will bring for the A and B-Class, but it also gives us a glimpse on what they might look like.

Mercedes-Benz planning an A-Class Roadster?!?

While we’ve actually heard Mercedes execs mention small cars and the U.S. multiple times in the same sentence, we didn’t think that they have this in mind – an A-Class based roadster. AutoWeek is reporting that Dieter Zetsche is considering a proposal for a two-seat roadster based on the A- and B-class. The compact front-wheel-drive roadster revives the idea behind the striking Vision SLA concept revealed at the Detroit auto show in 2000 (pictured above).

The decision for an A-Class roadster, which would be positioned below the SLK, might have something to do with VW plans on introducing a new mid-engine roadster. BMW is also planning an even smaller roadster than the current Z4, a 1-series based Z2 roadster.

Small cars are definitely the new trend, but how small should Mercedes go? Should they run behind BMW and the rest of the competition and release a model every time someone releases something. Well that’s definitely a good plan to fight the competition, but what will happen to the Mercedes brand when they become a “me-too” manufacturer. I say they bring back the smart roadster, which to me seems to be a better fit, than introduce a smart-like A-Class roadster.

Mercedes-Benz to bring A and B-Class successors to U.S. in 2012

Over past few years, we’ve heard at least a half dozen stories and reports on the possibility of bring the A and B-Class to the States. We’ve even seen spy shots of the B-Class in the desert, but nothing really happened. Mercedes execs are at it again. Stephen Cannon, Vice President of Marketing at Mercedes Benz USA, stated that they are currently deciding if they should offer the successors to the A and B-Class in the US, as they are seeing and feeling a trend towards smaller cars. A final decision has not yet been made, but it is said that if one is made shortly, models could start rolling in as early as 2012.

Their goal is not only to start selling smaller vehicles in the US, but also to offer small engine sizes, mainly 4-cylinders. They also want to start offering Diesel engines for almost all classes.

New Plant in Hungary: Home of the next-Gen A and B-Class

Rainer Schmückle, Chief Operating Officer of Mercedes-Benz Cars, and Gordon Bajnai, Hungarian Minister for National Development and Economy, signed the cooperation agreement for the construction of a new Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskem©t in presence of Ferenc Gyurcsà¡ny, Prime Minister of Hungary, and Dr. Gà¡bor Zombor, the Mayor of the city of Kecskem©t.

Mercedes-Benz is building the plant in order to create additional production capacity in the compact car segment, where the model range will be expanded from two to four vehicles. The plant contributes to the profitability of the product portfolio extension. .

In association with the plant in Rastatt, two vehicles from the next generation of today’s A and B Class are to roll off the production line in Kecskem©t from 2012. At the Rastatt plant, which in the future will produce three vehicles, investments of €600 million are planned.
