SL65 Black Series And Nissan GT-R Mix It Up

In response to a video posted here showing a straight line race between an 850hp Nissan GT-R and an SL65 AMG Black Series, we present two unmodified examples of the two. With more than a 100-horsepower difference between the GT-R and the SL65 AMG Black Series, there are no prizes for guessing who won. Below is a video of two stock examples of these cars on another course but using the same basic format.

As all enthusiasts know, the GT-R has become the benchmark for affordable performance cars and stock, it offers levels of performance that few cars can match. Although its price of admission is cheap, the Nissan’s maintenance requirements approach those of exotic cars. But as with most Japanese cars, even the Nissan GT-R comes off a mass production line, which cannot be said for the Black Series cars from AMG. Despite looking like a porky old geezer’s car, this SL65 AMG Black Series matches the all-wheel drive GT-R’s acceleration and walks away from there.

1955 Gullwing Sells For A Princely Amount

As this auction result shows, it’s not only Ferraris that have a lock on the staggering amounts that collector cars sell for nowadays. At a recently concluded Gooding and Company auction, a 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing garnered a $4,620,000 bid that made it the top seller for that auction. In comparison, a Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider changed hands at the same auction for $3,905,000.

What made this Gullwing so expensive is the fact the it’s practically a museum piece in terms of condition. Being one of only 29 alloy-bodied 300 SLs was also a major factor in making the car so desirable. Aside from the rarity of such a body, finding one on the open market is also a very rare occassion, so much so that the buyers who desperately wanted the car ended up in a bidding war.

Before the R231 SL Roadster’s release, Mercedes-Benz showed the 1951 300SL.

Guests at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show were able to view the 1952 LeMans race car with the 50 kilos lightweight, grid-type tubular frame, which became a famous backbone, not just of the W 194 and its production version launched in 1954 but also of the successful racing and racing sports cars of 1954/55. Under the hood was a then impressive 3.0 liter, 6-cylinder engine that produced 170 horsepower.
