Mercedes lessons at the 2015 Chinese Grand Prix

The Chinese Grand Prix continues to be kind to Lewis Hamilton, as the Mercedes driver took the victory in this year’s race ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg. Here are some points that were evident with the race and the outcome. Lewis Hamilton cruised but still showed speed where it counted Hamilton recorded a Grand Chelem (or Grand Slam) at the 2015 Chinese Grand Prix, which means he took pole position in qualifying, recorded the race’s fastest lap, and won while leading from the opening lap up until the end of race. This was Hamilton’s second such feat, after tallying one at last year’s Malaysian Grand Prix. While Ferrari had great pace, they couldn’t offset… Continue Reading »

F1: Malaysian GP – Mercedes finishes 2, 3 as Vettel grabs race win

It’s official: we have a competition in our hands for the 2015 Formula One season. Sebastian Vettel grabbed the victory at the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix ahead of the two Mercedes cars, showing that there’s a lot of work to be done by the defending constructors champion if it wants to fend off Ferrari this year. Lewis Hamilton failed to convert a pole position into a race victory for the first time in the last eight poles, but still finished second while Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg took the third and final spot on the podium at the Sepang Circuit. Hamilton finished a whopping 8.57 seconds behind the Ferrari, though. There was… Continue Reading »

F1: Malaysian GP qualifying – Mercedes’ Hamilton takes pole; Rosberg in P3

Don’t look now, but Ferrari’s trying to spoil the party. Lewis Hamilton will start the Malaysian Grand Prix on Sunday in pole position, after edging out Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg took P3 on the starting grid after a rainy qualifying session. The three Q3 times for the top 3 qualifiers were close: Hamilton posted 1:49.834, Vettel 1:49.908, and Rosberg 1:50.299. Hamilton actually set that time on his initial flying lap and never actually got to improve it, allowing Vettel to edge a bit too close for comfort. In the end, though, Hamilton was able to clinch his 40th career F1 pole position. Meanwhile, surrendering P2 to the Ferrari means ending a… Continue Reading »

New season, more of the same. That’s how it looked — and they made it look easy — for the Mercedes team at the opening of the 2015 Formula One season in Australia. Lewis Hamilton took the race win ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg for another Mercedes one-two finish, showing the world that the team-to-beat has not changed. Sebastian Vettel made his debut for the Ferrari team in grand fashion, taking the third spot on the podium after fending off a relentless Felipe Massa. Hamilton and Rosberg were all praises for the team on the radio after clinching first and second, respectively. “Great work, guys. Really awesome car,” said Rosberg. The race was marred… Continue Reading »

Mercedes to unveil 2015 F1 car on February 1; could come with 2015-spec F1 power unit after all

While there has been speculation that Mercedes could simply use the superbly designed 2014 power unit for the first few races of the 2015 season and just upgrade it through the course of the season given the new rulings handed out by the FIA on engine development, new reports have surfaced that say those rumors are not true and that Mercedes is already hard at work to bring a fresh power unit by the first test at Jerez on February 1. Mercedes could start 2015 season with old power unit

If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, that, plus the development of the something new could still be under way. That’s how things stand for the defending Formula One constructors champion Mercedes AMG Petronas, who is reportedly set to use its 2014 power unit through the first four races of the 2015 season. Engine suppliers Mercedes, Renault, and Ferrari were recently allowed by the FIA to conduct ongoing development for the power units throughout the 2015 season, allowing for up to a 48 percent change between last year’s designs to the final one for 2015. The percentage is based on ‘tokens’ assigned to specific parts within the power unit. It… Continue Reading »
