Facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA and AMG GLA Officially Make Their Debut

Giancarlo Perlas March 17, 2023

The facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLA range was just unveiled this week alongside the facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLB. The series features a selection of exterior, interior, tech, and powertrain updates to offer a breath of fresh air in its offerings.

Exterior

Starting off with the exterior, the facelifted GLA only displays minimal cosmetic enhancements on its armor. They are positioned exactly like the ones found on the new GLB.

With that, the new GLA SUV is fitted with a new radiator grille, updated LED headlights and taillights for a more appealing design and optimal functionality, and restyled front bumper with underguard protection. In addition, the new Starling Blue Metallic paint and three additional wheel designs in 18- and 20-inch sizes are also available to enhance the vehicle’s individualization options.

For the AMG GLA 35, the crossover is made sportier than ever as it benefits from the Mercedes high-performance division’s Panamericana front grille with vertical louvers as well as a more aggressive front bumper complete with a lip spoiler, new side skirts, and tubular twin tailpipes.

Interior

The interior updates more than makeup for the conservative refresh on the shell of the GLA. Upon entry, drivers and passengers are greeted by the SUV’s standard equipment that’s tailored to specific customer preferences.

The Progressive equipment line offers two interior colors for the upholstery, namely Black and Macchiato Beige. Going for the AMG Line unlocks the heated Nappa leather steering wheel as well as four upholstery color combinations. The latter includes Black, Bahia Brown, Titan Grey/Black, and Red/Black themes. It should be noted that the MB-Tex/microfiber material used in the upholstery consists largely of recycled materials, making it an eco-friendly option to please tree huggers.

For the tech in its cockpit, the GLA is highlighted by its free-standing double screen, consisting of an instrument panel and central multimedia display. Each diagonally measures 10.25 inches, providing it with a well-rounded high-tech appeal.

The various driving assistance, navigation, entertainment, and comfort elements of the auto are operated using the newest version MBUX infotainment system. The system now has newly developed display themes consisting of “Classic,” “Sporty,” and “Discreet” programs, allowing the output to be personalized depending on the user’s preferences. Features like Navigation, Media, Phone, and others, are available on the central display, which can be easily accessed in various ways via the touchscreen, steering-wheel controls, or by uttering the “Hey Mercedes” command to the voice assistant.

Moreover, the new GLA SUV’s standard equipment is upgraded, now including Highbeam Assist, Parking package, Mirror package, and Keyless GO package. It is also bundled with more advanced driver assistance systems, including Active Steering Assist for the more seamless management of Lane Keeping Assist. Then, the enhanced Driving Assistance suite notably comes with longitudinal parking working hand-in-hand with a camera-assisted 360-degree for a complete 3D visualization of the auto while being maneuvered in tough spots.

Lastly, the immersive Dolby Atmos audio experience, which adjusts to the various cabin conditions of the vehicle, is engineered to give a higher level of audio clarity for the infotainment system. The tech is integrated into the optional Burmester surround sound system of Mercedes.

Powertrain

The GLA SUV features a mild-hybrid powertrain partnering the internal combustion engine (ICE) to a 48-volt onboard power supply for its belt-driven starter-generator. The add-on provides up to a 13 hp boost upon start.

The hardware lets the auto coast even with the ICE turned off, too. The system likewise provides a smoother and quieter engine start.

Furthermore, the hybrid system gradually recovers energy when braking and accelerating, which is then converted into electrical energy. The output is directed at the 12-volt onboard network and 48-volt battery.

The SUV is only offered in GLA 250 and GLA 250 4MATIC trims in the US with uniform engine specs consisting of a 2.0-liter mild-hybrid inline-four rated at 221 hp. On the other hand, the version of the range in Europe is comprised of diesel, mild-hybrid petrol, and plug-in hybrid trims with outputs ranging from 116 hp to 224 hp.

Going in the direction of the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 combines a twin-scroll exhaust gas turbo in the mild-hybrid system raising the stakes at 302 hp.

Market Rollout

The Mercedes-Benz GLA SUV is expected to arrive in dealerships later in 2023. Meanwhile, its pricing is yet to be announced.
