How Far Can a Single Charge Take the Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+?

Giancarlo Perlas September 4, 2022

With the performance figures released by its maker, the Mercedes-Benz EQS promises to have the farthest electric range in the European market right now. Recently, the numbers on the EQS 450+ were put to the test to see if Mercedes is as good as its word.

According to the specs provided by Merc, the EQS 450+ EV’s 107.8 kWh usable battery power can cover up to 485 miles (780 km) based on WLTP cycle while EPA pegged it at 350 miles (563 km). That’s a huge discrepancy between the two, but EPA is considered by most as the more accurate benchmark in both tests.

Bjorn Nyland was up for the task, and as expected, the results were close to Merc’s claim. Based on the test, the car can reach up to 442 miles (711 km) at an average pace of 56 mph (90 km/h). Meanwhile, a 75-mph (120 km/h) test can only yield 335 miles, which is 24% down from the 56-mph test.

Both tests were conducted in a 20- to 21-degree Celsius environment and using 21-inch Goodyear Eagle F1 tires. So, from the results, the ideal speed to maximize the range of the EQS 450+ is 56 mph.

Surprisingly, the EQS 450+ performed better than the EQS 580 tested by Nyland earlier. The 56-mph run of the car on a single charge only allowed it to reach 318 miles while the 75-mph cruise only covered 251 miles. The tests for the EV were made under cold conditions, specifically in a 4-degree Celsius environment, so the numbers should be up a bit on higher temperatures but it will still unlikely match the EQS 450+.
