Mercedes-AMG GLE Edition 55 SUV and Coupe Variants Headed to the U.S.

Giancarlo Perlas June 21, 2022

In line with the 55th anniversary of AMG, the high-performance division of the three-pointed star marque once again unveiled a limited-edition model for the Mercedes-AMG GLE SUV and Coupe.

Aptly named the Mercedes-AMG GLE Edition 55, this version is available in six trims in the European market. Four of which will be offered in the U.S. with slightly tweaked outputs.

According to MBUSA, the Edition 55 models will be offered in its dealerships later this year. In keeping up with the theme and to maintain its exclusivity, the limited series will only be offered in 55 units for each model.

The Edition 55 models benefit from the AMG Night Package which offers a high-gloss black paint all over the exterior, including the front grille, the mesh in the bumper vents, front splitter, tailpipes, rear diffuser, and other parts that were used to be highlighted in chrome. In addition, it features a special contrasting foil strip on the sides and 22-inch forged wheels in matte grey. As a bonus, the company is also throwing in an AMG Indoor Car Cover with breathable, tear-resistant, antistatic synthetic fiber.

Meanwhile, the same package gives a two-tone finish for the interior upholstery that’s clad in black Nappa and classic red. Furthermore, the cabin is decorated with stainless steel door sill trims with red illuminated “AMG” lettering to welcome the driver and passengers, black floor mats with red stitching, matte carbon black elements, and “Edition 55” badges here and there.

The Mercedes-AMG GLE Edition 55 variants heading in the US are the following:

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 SUV and Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 S Coupe

The two trims have similar engines, being a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a mild hybrid system and electric auxiliary compressor. It is capable of producing 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque while the ISG provides a boost of 21 hp and 184 lb-ft. All that goes to an all-wheel-drive system and is distributed via a nine-speed automatic transmission. The configuration allows the SUV and Coupe to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds while its top speed is electronically capped at 155 mph.

Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S SUV and Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe

The top trims share the same drive configuration as their corresponding lower-trim units. However, both utilize a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 mated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to produce 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque with the same level of boost provided by the ISG as the AMG GLE 53. Due to the higher output, the SUV and Coupe under this trim are capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in only 3.7 seconds and can achieve an electronically-capped max speed of 174 mph.
