Mercedes-AMG GT R Gets Axed, Base GT to Get More Goodies

The streamlining all over Mercedes-Benz continues. Recently, it was reported that another casualty of the proverbial ax would be the Mercedes-AMG GT R, also known as the “Beast From Green Hell”.
According to Motor Authority, the formerly most powerful sports coupe in the GT range before the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is getting discontinued this year. The move is to focus on the marketing of the new Black Series as the new range-topper of the high-performance brand.
At the moment, the AMG GT R costs around $160,000 while the AMG GT Black Series starts at $326,050, which is double the amount of the former. Its maker aims to make up for its loss by giving the base GT model as well as the other derivatives of the lineup like the convertible and GTC a power boost.
For 2021, the base AMG GT retains its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine but the unit is modified to produce up to 523 hp and 494 lb-ft of torque. The numbers are up by 54 hp and 29 lb-ft compared to the previous model of the car. The increase takes the coupe from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds while its top speed is rated at 194 mph.
New optional extras are also introduced in the AMG GT like the Stealth Edition. It adds carbon fiber roof, tinted windows, black brake calipers, dark chrome body accents, and matte black wheels measuring 19 inches and 20 inches for the front and rear, respectively. Meanwhile, the interior benefits from new performance seats, darker steering wheel spokes, black paddle shifters, black leather seat covers with diamond stitching, and special badges.
The updated Mercedes-AMG GT is scheduled for a spring release this year.
