Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class and New EQA EV Officially Confirmed

Giancarlo Perlas February 13, 2020

After a series of spy shots, the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been officially confirmed to arrive this year. The EQA electric vehicle is also scheduled in the same period.

The company is yet to confirm the exact unveiling date of the upcoming S-Class model, but sources say that it will be in the second half of 2020 during the fall. The most likely venue for the event will be at the Paris Motor Show.

As reported earlier, the flagship car of Mercedes will no longer offer the coupe and cabriolet models. This is a part of the brand’s streamlining measures in order to save around €1.4 billion in the next three years, and focus more on its products with stronger demand.

The new S-Class will ride in the modified version of the Mercedes MRA platform. The car is rumored to get at least a level 3 autonomous driving system and automatic parking feature. Its engines will include a 2.9-liter turbo inline-six, 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder, 4.0-liter turbo V8, and as Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius confirmed, a V12. Some of the mentioned powertrains might adopt a mild-hybrid setup.

Meanwhile, the EQA, Mercedes’ first compact electric sport utility vehicle is expected to be launched in the third or fourth quarter of the year. The EV will most probably copy many design elements found in the GLA compact SUV, but with slight tweaks to set it apart from its fuel-guzzling sibling. It might be offered in two or three powertrains.
