Giancarlo Perlas January 11, 2020

Mercedes-Benz retained its spot in the top position of the luxury car segment of the market worldwide as 2019 folded. The brand also outdid itself by achieving a new record in sales for the ninth consecutive year.

The three-pointed star marque delivered a total of 2,339,562 luxury cars to customers last year. Meanwhile, Daimler’s smart brand handed over 116,781 units to buyers in the same period. That brought their combined sales to a sum of 2,456,343 units.

The top three major markets of the company, namely China, Germany, and the USA, displayed an increase in sales based on a year-on-year basis. China remained the key driving factor of Mercedes’ growth on a global scale as it recorded 693,443 sales, which was 6.2% up from 2018.

Mercedes has held the number one position since 2016, and Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, is positive that they will be stronger despite the projected fast transformation of the automotive industry in the next two years. He believes that they will continue to increase their sales and be competitive through their investment in new technologies and profitable sales growth. In addition, they are now setting their course in the luxury car market as the “pioneer of sustainable luxury also in an era of CO2-neutral mobility.

Mercedes’ strongest sales came from its sport utility vehicles. The company sold a total of 783,700 units of the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLC Coupe, EQC, GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS and G-Class. However, the figures of the SUV lineup were down by 4.5% compared to the previous year. The GLC SUV was the best-selling vehicle of the brand in 2019.
