The New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Has Intriguing Taillights

Giancarlo Perlas August 8, 2019

A spy shot from a round of testing in Breckenridge, Colorado showed the Mercedes-Benz S-Class prototype in its development phase. A fresh photo revealed the rear and triangular taillights of the vehicle.

The S-Class prototypes are doing rounds in the small ski resort town based on the spy photo of Carscoops reader Evan Solida. As many spy shots revealed before, this new image showed that the new S-Class is stylistically different than the outgoing model.

While the rear is heavily camouflaged, that’s not enough to hide the triangular taillights peeking from underneath. The lights are inspired by the CLS, which was not well received by Mercedes fans. It doesn’t look like Mercedes will divert from the plan to fit the S-Class with the same taillights, so better prepare for that.

Aside from the new taillights, the latest S-Class will also feature a different rear bumper design. Previous spy pictures showed that the upcoming S-Class will have a new front fascia, a new grille, and full matrix LED headlights. The car will have the new pop-out door handles too.

In the cabin, a lot of modifications and upgrades were done. The center console has a Tesla-like touchscreen. There’s a large horizontal digital cluster just in front of the driver and behind the steering wheel.

The new S-Class is coming with a hybrid 2.9-liter and 3.0-liter petrol and diesel inline-six engines that can offer an electric driving range of up to 62 miles. AMG models such as the S 63, which will be likely introduced in the future, will have Mercedes’ 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 machine updated to a 48-volt mild-hybrid tech.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class will launch in 2020.
