Next-Gen Mercedes-Benz GLS Takes the Cold Climate Challenge

Giancarlo Perlas December 6, 2018

The current Mercedes-Benz GLS is but a facelifted version of the Mercedes-Benz GL sport utility vehicle. Therefore, from the second-generation model of the GL to the present GLS, nothing much has changed. However, new spy videos have revealed that the large luxury SUV of Mercedes is finally getting a next-generation model.

The video above shows the GLS going around a snowy terrain and under a fair weather. The activity is to test how the different components of the SUV will react to various temperatures, including extreme conditions.

The prototype in the video above is not too different from the ones we have been seeing earlier. The vehicle is still clad in heavy camouflage but the exposed areas and bulges on the wraps give us an idea as to what to expect from the auto.

The front grille of the prototype GLS suggests that we may be looking at its standard Mercedes-Benz model. It should be noted though that we also previously posted spy shots that contain videos and images of what we suspect to be the AMG variants of the product.

The upcoming GLS will likely ride on the same MHA platform used by the GLE. However, the new GLS is looking a bit bigger than the current GLE and the outgoing GLS model.

One of the engines that will most probably be carried by the new GLS is the 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine of Mercedes. A petrol and a diesel version of the SUV is expected. Meanwhile, the range-topping version of the unit, the AMG GLS 63, might have at least 600 hp.

The next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLS is coming next year as the three-pointed star marque’s answer to the BMW X7.
