Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S is the Fastest SUV in the Ring

Giancarlo Perlas November 22, 2018

Earlier, AMG boss Tobias Moers said that they are not interested in setting new records on the Nurburgring Nordschleife track with their One hypercar. However, their actions as of late have contradicted their statement as the Mercedes-AMG GT S 4-Door claimed the “fastest fully-fledged four-seater production car” title on the circuit, and recently, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S took the mantle of being the fastest series-production sport utility vehicle to conquer the track.

A new video released by AMG shows the AMG GLC 63 S taking on the Nurburgring challenge. The SUV logged a notarized time of 7:49:369 on the 20.8 km lap.

Before the AMG GLC 63 S took the crown, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio held the fastest production SUV record with a time of 7:51:7. However, the first attempt of the high-performance GLC on the track immediately broke the record by 2 seconds. The vehicle was driven by the AMG Development Engineer Markus Hofbauer during the ordeal.

The AMG GLC 63 S is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 engine with 503 hp. In comparison, its rival, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio, possesses a smaller 2.9-liter V6 engine capable of 505 hp. While the two seems evenly matched when it comes to horsepower, the key difference can be seen on the torque figures of the two. The Mercedes outmatches the Alfa Romeo by 73 lb-ft, wherein the numbers are at 516 lb-ft and 443 lb-ft, respectively.

We are yet to see how the record of the AMG GLC 63 S will stand when other high-performance SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid will attempt to unseat Mercedes from the fastest SUV throne.
