A new Mercedes-AMG sports car is in the works. The product will be a standalone vehicle of AMG with no Mercedes-Benz counterpart. It would serve as an indirect successor to the SLC.

According to Autocar, the concept for the new AMG sports car was just presented at the board of Mercedes-Benz. The upcoming auto will have a mid-engine setup and many of its styling elements will be derived from the Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar. The vehicle will also receive a hybrid powertrain.

The report said that AMG is considering about putting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine in the still unnamed car. The unit would provide up to 400 bhp in addition to the output of its electric motors, and that would put it within the performance levels of the Porsche 718 Cayman.

As a recap, the 718 Cayman’s base engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four with 300 bhp. Another configuration it offers includes a 2.5-liter inline-four engine with 350 bhp. Meanwhile, the range-topping Cayman GTS has 365 bhp.

Further solidifying the new Mercedes-AMG car’s status as a challenger to the 718 Cayman is its proposed design. The AMG vehicle will have a two-seating layout. From there, two body styles will be made available. One gets a fixed-roof coupe design and the other is an open-top roadster.

The new sports car project comes to fruition, it will be the fifth dedicated AMG model of Mercedes. It would join the ranks of the SLS, GT, GT Four-Door Coupe and Project One high-performance vehicles.
