2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS Spied Cruising in Traffic

Giancarlo Perlas July 23, 2018

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS was spied again while undergoing testing on public roads. The sport utility vehicle was seen covered in a heavy zebra camouflage, but a closeup of its bulges and components peeking out from its wrap give us an idea what to expect from it.

Many may agree that it’s about time for the GLS to get a next-generation model. After all, the current model of the vehicle is merely a facelifted and renamed version of the Mercedes-Benz GL.

The GLS in the video is riding on a new architecture. The model shares the MRA platform that will also grace the next Mercedes-Benz GLE. That means the succeeding GLS will be shedding a lot of weight, which will translate to better performance.

Speaking of performance, the engines within the next-gen GLS are still unconfirmed. However, it will likely get the same inline-six and V8 units found in the next-gen Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Since the S-Class and the GLS are closely-related, the interior detailing of Mercedes’ flagship sedan will most probably be carried over to the luxury SUV as well.

Going back to the spy video, the upcoming GLS appears to be getting more legroom than this year’s outgoing model. Then its front is noticeably sporting a double louver design in the radiator grille. In addition, the GLS in the video possesses fewer creases in its body compared with its predecessor, which is in line with Mercedes’ latest design philosophy. Lastly, the SUV is carrying a new set of headlamps, and there seem to be changes in the sculpture of its bumpers.

For now, it is hard to make out all of the key upgrades in the next-gen GLS, but we will keep everyone updated once new details come out. So stay tuned!
