The Mercedes-Benz CLS is getting an array of updates for its 2019 models in the US. Major changes will be introduced in its tech and performance.

According to Mercedes-Benz USA, the four-door coupe will keep its existing trims, namely the CLS 450, CLS 450 4MATIC and the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53. However, the cars will be fitted with a new set of engines paired with electric motors.

Powertrains

The new CLS 450 models are equipped with Mercedes’ updated inline-six engine. The petrol-fed power unit produces 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. The combustion engine is combined with Mercedes’ EQ Boost technology and an onboard 48-volt electric system. The electric drive provides the car with extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque for a brief period upon acceleration. The electric system also helps reduce the turbo lag of the car. Then, the vehicle’s standard 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission offers it faster shift times. The optional AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension complements the driving dynamics of the car with its adaptive damping.

The AMG CLS 53 is going to get an upgraded inline-six engine too. The unit delivers 429 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. The electric-powered auxiliary supercharger making use of the EQ Boost tech also adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque to the auto. The AMG 4MATIC+ All-Wheel Drive with fully variable torque distribution and AMG Sport Suspension based on the AIR BODY CONTROL further improves the performance of the car’s agility and the comfort of its occupants while cruising the road.

Technology

The cockpit of the CLS benefits from a 12.3-inch high-resolution COMAND display with smartphone integration. Meanwhile, the ambient lighting system inside the four-door coupe can be individually adjusted in 64 colors. Moreover, the driver assistance systems of the auto include the optional Driver Assistance Package featuring Mercedes’ advanced Intelligent Drive Technology from the current S-Class.

Appearance

The exterior of the new CLS starting from the 450 model comes with new LED front and rear lights, and 19-inch wheels. The AMG body styling trickles down to the standard Mercedes-Benz versions of the car as well.

Inside, the air vents are redesigned, but the major change can be found on the rear passenger seats. The rear seats feature a three-passenger layout with 40:20:40 split configuration that can be folded to increase boot capacity.
