Mercedes-Benz Reveals New S-Class Cabrio’s OLED Taillights

Giancarlo Perlas August 28, 2017

Shortly before the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Mercedes-Benz revealed more details of its S-Class Cabrio’s OLED taillights. This tells us that Mercedes is, at least, preparing to unveil updated versions of the S-Class cabriolet and coupe. The teaser video from the company showed off the Cabrio’s OLED taillights.

The 22-second teaser video showed the left rear lamp in close detail. This was to highlight the 33 individual OLED elements on the taillights. The OLEDs are arranged in three rows and were overlapping each other to curve around the lamp. This was made possible because of the thin profile of the OLED lights.

Each of the row can be controlled and can light up depending on the sequence the driver chooses. In normal use, it could be programmed to look like the sequential turn signals on the Mustang and Audi A4. The video showed that the S-Class Cabrio’s OLED taillights also has amber turn signals. This might mean that Mercedes can surprise us by providing new ways to highlight this feature.

There’s more to the S-Class Cabrio than its fancy new taillights, however. The video also showed us that the front and rear bumpers have been revamped. And based on earlier reports and teasers, we can expect the base model Coupe and the Cabrio to come equipped with a twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 that can produce 463 horsepower. The current model runs on a 4.7-liter V-8 engine.

There’s more news to come as the Frankfurt show approaches, plus we can also expect the S-Class Coupe to be revealed there, too.
