Daimler announced that Nico Rosberg finally got his contract extension under its Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team. The company revealed that Mercedes and the German driver closed a two-extension in the latter’s contract. That means he will still be competing under the banner of the three-pointed star brand in the 2017 and 2018 F1 seasons.

At the time of Rosberg’s signing. He was leading the 2016 F1 Driver Standings. However, the conclusion of the recent Hungarian Grand Prix drove him back to the second position of the rankings. He exchanged places with his teammate and reigning F1 World Champion  Lewis Hamilton after losing in the latest race.

Currently, Hamilton is ahead of six points in the standings. The Briton has 192 points while Rosberg has 186 points. It would be the first time this season for Hamilton to overtake his partner in the rankings.

With ten more races left this season, Rosberg still has a huge chance of bagging the championship that has evaded his grasp since Mercedes F1 team came into dominance in 2014.

The German driver is the son of Keke Rosberg, a 1982 F1 World Champion. Nico Rosberg joined the Mercedes F1 group in 2010 after a successful run in Williams F1 Team other racing organizations.

Back then, Rosberg was paired with the F1 legend and multi-time World Champion Michael Schumacher. Despite the hype surrounding Schumacher’s comeback in F1 that year, he managed to finish the season at seventh place in the Driver’s Championship, which was two positions higher than his partner.

At present, Rosberg has 19 Grand Prix wins and 26 pole positions in his record.
