Steve Cannon of Mercedes USA questions Tesla’s future.

The 2014 New York International Auto Show marked the arrival of the much-awaited Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe. It was certainly another milestone in the Mercedes-AMG brand history. However, the event did not come without a controversy.

According to multiple sources, including Forbes, Steve Cannon of Mercedes USA made some rather questionable remarks to Elon Musk’s Tesla. The Mercedes USA chief criticized the electric car maker’s limited network and few service shops. He added that only time will tell if the company will maintain its success in the long run.

The topic about Tesla came while Cannon was talking about the plan of his company to introduce more models, including hybrid models. He pointed out that the new hybrid system of the German brand could potentially become a mainstream technology, and that it would present a more viable option to people who are considering to buy a totally electric-powered Tesla car.

The Mercedes USA boss went on to say that Tesla may be great but it will have a hard time to compete with more established luxury car brands like Mercedes and Porsche once they enter the market it currently occupies.

Mercedes S500 Launches Late 2014

It should be noted later this year, Mercedes will launch its 2015 S500 plug-in hybrid in the market. The car’s V6 engine paired with an electric motor is reportedly capable of going up to 20 miles in full electric power while it has a 50 mpg consumption on standard fuel. Once it’s out, it will be Cannon’s chance to prove his point.
