Latest Mercedes-Benz Warning System Set to Counter Ghost Drivers

Peter Parcon January 22, 2013

new warning systemA new warning system was introduced by Mercedes-Benz recently that is meant to reduce instances where drivers go the wrong way. This is part of the effort of the luxury car manufacturer to counter “Ghost Drivers” or Geisterfahrers.

The new system is meant to stop people from inadvertently driving in the wrong lane. It features a camera mounted on the windscreen of the vehicle that will look out for no-entry signs. Three loud sounds are made by the system whenever the vehicle is set to pass a no entry sign. The instrument cluster will also show a big no -entry sign once this happens.

Although the system will likely save a lot of lives, it may not stop all “Ghost Drivers.” Over 25 people were killed due to drivers passing on the wrong side of the road in the last three months in Germany.

The latest system is expected to be released into the market on the refurbished Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
