Explained: The Self-Directed System On The 2014 S-Class [Video]

Peter Parcon December 17, 2012

Mercedes-Benz has always put a premium on safety for its products and the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S Class is no exception as the company has made it the first vehicle to provide a self-directed system that allows it to maneuver itself.

A series of videos were posted recently that explained this self-directed system of the S Class. The vehicle features a number of integrated sensors monitors road markings and traffic up to a distance of over 650 feet. Together with the computer program and electronic steering, the sensors will allow the system to control the car without any involvement from the driver.

This fully automatic system on the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is called Steering Assist. One video explains the Distronic Plus with Steering Assist, which monitors the vehicle up to speeds of 200 kmh.

The Steering Assist feature keeps the vehicle in its lane by monitoring the markings on the road. It also monitors other vehicles once the traffic starts to build up. The feature can also monitor road signs and makes the necessary adjustments depending on the driving situation.

The company also integrated a means of monitoring the alertness of the driver into the system. The driver would have to concentrate on driving all the time, although a warning is sent by the system if the hands of the driver are not on the steering wheel.

Mercedes also posted other videos that explain the Pre-Safe Brake System, the Bas Plus, and the Active Lane Keeping Assist as well as the Blind Spot Assist system of the vehicle.
