Saoutchik-designed Mercedes-Benz S Type Takes Pebble Beach Best of Show Plum

Ryan Joseph Ramos August 23, 2012

A 1928 Mercedes-Benz S Type designed by famed coachbuilder Jacques Saoutchik took home the Best of Show award at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. You kind of expect top-tier automakers like Merc to keep winning these awards, but once you realize that this is the seventh time the company fielded a car that won the Best of Show plum, then you’ll realize just how consistently good Merc is.

Saoutchik received the S Type chassis on August 2, 1928 and delivered it to New York’s Charles Levine sometime around December of that same year. The current owners, Paul and Judy Andrews out of Texas, had the vintage car restored first after 30 years of dormancy in storage.

As stated above, Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to winning the most coveted award in this prestigious automotive event. Aside from being the manufacturer of 7 Best of Show recipients, the automaker’s cars have had over 120 models receiving First in Class and Special Awards since 1950.
