Mercedes the Most Expensive Car to Insure

Forbes has put together a list, as they always do, of the “Most Expensive Cars to Insure” and believe it or not, Mercedes-Benz has secured the top three positions on the list. The SL, S, and CL-Class have been classified as the most expensive production cars to insure. It is no surprise that a car with an MSRP of $135,400 and 5.5 liter V8 engine would have an insurance cost of $22,536 a year.

The same is true for the S Class, with an MSRP $123,888, it has an yearly insurance cost of $21,161. It is followed by the new CL, which costs $122,050, and has an insurance cost of $20,942.

This is certainly one of those, if you can’t afford the insurance then you certainly can’t afford the car, or the other way around.

  1. 20k in insurance cost is an inaccurate figure. I own a ’05 sl 500 live in a major city with business use and it only cost $2,100.00 a year. I think they have the decimal point in the incorrect spot.

  2. Since I don’t own any of the above mentioned cars, I am not able to say if this is true or not. I certainly do believe you when you say that you only pay 10% of what Forbes says it cost someone to insure an SL.

    Here is what they said:

For modest coverage ($500 deductibles on collision and comprehensive coverage, $100,000 each for personal and property coverage and $25,000 each for medical and uninsured coverage) on this year’s $135,400 Mercedes SL, owners will pay about $22,536 a year.

Where did they get that quote? That is crazy!

  3. I carry $1000 comp and collision deductibles and $1M liability limits. Something is definitely incorrect in their calculations. Trust me, I own a property and casualty insurance agency. I’m headed out to pick up the magazine this evening.

  4. Another Forbes story on the most expensive cars to operate gives the insurance figures at about $4K a year, not $20K. But I think they are getting their quotes for Lindsay Lohan or an epileptic alcoholic teenager with no driving experience in Manhattan. The Forbes articles are always completely over the top and totally unreliable. Forbes has done it again. (They say it costs $1200 a year for “maintenance” for a BMW when it’s free.)

My CL55 AMG costs about $1000 a year to insure.
