The Upcoming ForTwo and ForFour is Smart’s Last Chance

Back in 1998, Daimler introduced a solution for motorists in crowded cities who usually have a hard time maneuvering and looking for a parking space. The answer came in the form of the Smart ForTwo. The two-door and two-passenger Smart car was projected to be a hit, because aside from its improved maneuverability and compact size, it was also offered in a more affordable price. The 98 inches long, 60 inches wide and 61 inches high car was only sold in the market at $9,150. Fast-forward to the present, after losing around $4.1 billion in the brand based on the analysis of Bankhaus Metzler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz finally… Continue Reading »

No More Subcompact Models for Mercedes-Benz

The introduction of Mercedes-Benz of its compact models has gained it a lot of profit. Particularly, the launching of the German automaker’s CLA-Class in the U.S. was instrumental in catapulting its status as the number-one  luxury car brand in the region. So far, the CLA is considered by the company as its “best launch” in over 20 years. Due to the huge success of the Mercedes-Benz CLA models, the German company’s plant in Kecksmet, Hungary even added a third shift to answer to the overwhelming demand of its compact segment. 5 Smart Missed Opportunities

Smart has become a brand name synonymous with stylish compact city cars. An alliance was formed back in 1994 by watch manufacturer, Swatch, and Daimler-Benz AG to undertake the new project. Interest in the brand grew immediately following the first model’s release in 1998. Come launch, city commuters could buy a compact city car which wasn’t only attractive but incredibly practical around town. Drivers could even park perpendicularly in an otherwise parallel-parked street. The brand experienced some attempted expansion in its short history, which almost always failed. However, the future launch of the Renault Twingo-based Smart ForFour spells an opportunity to pick up where it left off with the former… Continue Reading »

Smart Car Sharing: Milan Gets car2go Service

This month marks another milestone in Daimler’s car2go car-sharing service, as Milan gets to enjoy a fleet of 450 smart fortwo vehicles slated to be fully available by the middle of September. While the smart eco-friendly vehicle brand certainly isn’t the biggest moneymaker in the Daimler stable, those vehicles together with the car2go platform allows the German automaker to make good on its promise of delivering sustainable automotive solutions, particularly for urban mobility applications that are focused upon by car2go. Being able to expand into a city like Milan expands the platform’s reach and should allow for better positioning in the European marketplace moving forward. If car2go continues to reach… Continue Reading »
