AMG Releases SLS GT3 Production Video On YouTube

Now that the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 has notched a few important victories under its belt, here’s a look at how this solid performer is being produced. Released at no less than the official AMG channel at YouTube, the video shows how this circuit beast is put together.

Starting with the bare shell, you can see that the documentation process is fairly complete. All the better to prove the provenance of these cars when they become collector’s classics a few decades on. You’ll see the beautifully made components come together to make a racer that is more than the sum of its parts. In fact, the components and workmanship that go into this car is of such a quality that it’s almost a shame to race this car. For enthusiasts all over who can only see clips of the cars on the track, this intimate glimpse of how this hyperformance road car is transformed into a track beast completes the picture of why this $500,000 car is so desirable.

In a reminder of the marque’s past dominance in motorsport, Mercedes-Benz SLS GT3s took the first three places in the recently-concluded 24 Hours of Dubai. The race was held at the 5.39 km long circuit that also is used for F1 Grands Prix. The first place in this race was also the maiden victory for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 in a 24-hour race. Second and third places were taken by HEICO Motorsport SLS GT3s, which had Mercedes DTM driver Bernd Schneider playing a supporting role as part of Mercedes’ customer support program.

Out of a starting field of 72 cars, four SLS GT3s finished in the top ten. The FIA’s GT3 class has become one of the most popular racing classes in the world, and all the top marques such as Porsche, Ferrari and Aston Martin have made available GT3-spec customer cars for entry into this highly competitive series. Finding a dominant pack of SLS GT3s in the season opening race doesn’t bode well for the SLS GT3‘s competition and it will be interesting to see how the rest of of the year pans out for the FIA’s GT3 class.

Mercedes SLS Black Series To Be Available In 2013

mercedes sls black series will have 650 hp roadster version 41230 7 597x314 Mercedes SLS Black Series To Be Available In 2013

Mercedes’ Black Series variants have established themselves as the most hardcore development of a particular model. These raw-edged cars forsake the pampering luxury Mercedes-Benz is known for, providing  instead an unadulterated driving experience that few will ever experience on a daily basis. As a result, Black Series models have become objects of desire and it is not uncommon to see production runs sold out weeks after they are announced.

Coming in 2013 will be one of the ultimate Black Series variants to be ever made, as that will be when the SLS Black Series is slated to be produced.  And to be worthy of that badge, the 6.2 liter engine in the SLS will have its output increased to 650 horsepower. Just like the current run of the SLS, a Black Series Roadster will also be offered.

Even so, Mercedes’ current supercar may not have the lungs to run with the fastest offerings from Ferrari and Lamborghini. Which is why the next-generation SLS is already under development. For the Black Series that will be made available in 2013, expect to shell out more than a quarter million Euros. That is, if you can get your name on the production list in the first place.

SLS AMG Asserts Its Presence In Real-World Video

Coverage of the SLS AMG has certainly not been lacking for the German manufacturer’s fabulous supercar, but a lot of these have been produced by professional outfits tasked with coming up with high quality output to make an impact.

But the SLS AMG doesn’t need extra help to make its presence felt, as this video shows. Taken at a mall in the UAE, the clip begins with the car entering the frame as it prowls down the driveway leading towards the road. Looking like a runway model on a catwalk, the SLS AMG exudes a presence that cannot be ignored. The rumble of the exhaust as it passes the camera promises of performance that surely exhilarates and which few cars can match. It’s too bad the road wasn’t long enough for the driver to make a full throttle run. Most enthusiasts who don’t even dare to dream of owning this supercar would surely have appreciated seeing the sound and fury this car can unleash.

Europe Only SLS AMG Homologation Special To Be Released

Mercedes has confirmed that it will be producing an SLS GT3 homologation special to qualify its supercar for various upcoming championships in Europe. Since homologation specials are very limited and thus very rare, don’t expect to be able to whip out your checkbook and order one. Specially if you live in a place called the U.S.A.

Mercedes has deemed that the documentary and legal requirements that need to be fulfilled to sell this street-legal race car in America are not worth the effort. At any rate, Mercedes-AMG’s Director of Vehicle Development, Tobias Moers has confirmed that the company will be producing the SLS AMG Black Series, so this hardcore variant should be able to satisfy most enthusiasts. The Black Series will have a minimum output of 610 horsepower, with handling to match and a much-improved power-to-weight ratio. Though not quite a homologation special, an SLS AMG Black Series is the next best thing to having one.
