Wheelsandmore Upgrades the Mercedes SLR Mclaren

Hot on the heels of modifying the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, tuning specialist Wheelsandmore have next focused their resources on developing a kit for modifying your Mercedes SLR McLaren.

As with the SLS AMG, Wheelsandmore is offering two upgrade packages for the standard SLR. For the first stage, the tuner will do an ECU remap of the engine, raising power from the standard 626 horsepower and 780 Newton-meters of torque to 650 horsepower and 830 Nm. The stage II remap brings the output up to 680 horsepower and 870 Nm.

Since the SLR 722 comes from the factory with 650 hp and 820 Nm on tap, the stage I mods come in the form of an ECU upgrade, as well as replacing the factory exhaust with a handmade stainless steel exhaust system. Sport catalytic converters and new mufflers also replace the factory units. This first step up up gives the car 670 hp and 855 Nm of torque. The stage II kit bumps the horsepower rating to 700 and supplies 910 Nm of torque to your right foot.

Other upgrades available include an aluminum coilover suspension with adjustable compression and rebound settings, as well as uprated brakes to cope with the horsepower increase. Also available are 20-inch lightweight alloy rims, carbon fiber components and quilted leather interior.

The Return of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

A great deal of excitement and thrill is expected with the return of the Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren under the name: McLaren SLR Edition. According to a report of Autoblog Germany, 25 units will be produced for the market by Mclaren.

The come backing Mercedes-Benz SLR Mclaren which was displayed at the Essen Motor Show, has a more attractive redesigned front bumper with oversized air intakes and a new type of mesh grille. The rounded shape side air vents has a new layout giving it a sportier look, and add to that, the new rear diffuser for its aerodynamics.

The power plant is still expected to be the same supercharged 5.4 literV8 engine with 626 horses in it with a peak torque of 780 Nm (575 lb-ft) capable of doing 0 to 62 mph sprint in 3.8 seconds. McLaren has not released any details yet about the car, so an official confirmation on the project should say if there are any tweaks done on the engine.

The project is to show competition on how the performance-delivering job is supposed to be done. The development is some sort of a customer tuning project and it seems McLaren would like to keep info in the wraps. Meanwhile, let’s stay on the sidelines and be on the look out for that official confirmation.

Michael Jordan’s SLR up on eBay

Ever shopped on eBay? Well, you had better if you want to get a load of this 2007 Mercedes-Benz SLR 722. Believe it or not, this baby was once owned by the now-retired but still very much unsurpassable Airness himself, Michael Jordan. It’s only got about 962 miles on its odometer, and still has factory warranty up until August of next year… or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.

This limited 722 Edition boasts crystal antimony grey paint finish with an equally impressive black interior color. The powerplant under the hood has about 650 horses once you rev at 6,500rpm, and delivers around 830Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. She’ll be able to take you past the 200mph mark, specifically 209mph, which makes her faster than the base SLR model by around 2mph. Zero to 60mph? A mere 3.6 seconds.

With such power, it’s no question that the 722 rides on a tuned suspension system. Its dampers have been adjusted for stiffness while its 19-inch black alloys come to a halt using 15-inch brake rotors. The front air dam had been revised while a rear diffuser was added to improve the 722′s overall downforce.

eBay’s asking for US$429,990 or whoever bids the best offer. For that price, you’ll get full documents, books, keys, interior amenities, k40 radar and, of course, your very own SLR car cover. Until October 31 only people.

Flame On! Mercedes Benz 300 SLR

Ever heard of a car that is so hot that it’s started to flame on? The Mercedes Benz 300 SLR was so hot especially in 1955 where it was a sports racing car for the  1955 World Sports Car Championship season.

The car specification pretty impressive, even for today’s standards. It has the Formula 1 car’s 8 cylinder in-line engine, 310 horsepower, and a maximum torque of 318 N-m. The high-octane fuel mixture of 65 percent low-lead gasoline and 35 percent benzene makes the car fuel somewhat odd.

But it has some drawbacks. Even with the innovative air-brake, the drum brakes were not effective enough to stop driver Pierre Levegh, who was driving a Mercedes Benz 300 SLR in a race event, to become airborne. The ultra-lightweight bodywork’s high magnesium content caused it to ignite in the ensuing fuel fire, causing significant injury and loss of life of 82 spectators including Levegh.

It was the highest fatality accident in the history of motor sport. Following the tragedy, Mercedes withdrew from competitive motor sport until the mid-1980s. Flame on indeed!

Mercedes gearing up for an SLR Stirling Moss ad starring Mika Hakkinen

Seems like Mercedes-Benz is coming up with a new ad for its very exclusive, very rare SLR Stirling Moss Edition. Seen in the streets of Barcelona was two-time Formula One Drivers’ Championship winner Mika Hakkinen sitting behind the wheels of the elite Mercedes vehicle.

Hakkinen, who once spent time with Mercedes’ McLaren and despite his retirement, remains involved with Mercedes in an undisclosed role. Hakkinen is one lucky guy to be driving the Stirling Moss for this commercial (possibly while another one’s sitting in his garage at home). Mercedes only crafted 75 of these SLRs and its pricey tag of over one million US dollars could be quite steep for ordinary guys like me.

Mercedes didn’t give any information about the upcoming ad but an Opel Astra Coupe and what appears to be a Ferrari (though watchers said it couldn’t have been) were part of the shoot, probably as part of the support cast.
