Despite oil prices surging all over the world plus the absence of automotive incentives for car buyers, Daimler AG says that it still expects to perform well in China, predicting at least a 20 percent growth in the country. Daimler Northeast Asia Ltd. Chairman Ulrich Walker says during a press conference that their expected outlook is merely a “conservative” target.

Walker adds that he’s not too worried that the market in China will be affected heavily by new government measures in persuading car buyers from purchasing new cars in order to help the worsening traffic situation in the country. He believes that China still has huge potential as a market for new car buyers saying “low car density and urbanization will provide great potential for future growth.”

He explains further that people’s propensity to buy new cars will rise along with salary increases in the near future. The total sales growth expected for China overall is pegged to be slow at 10% to 15% after a successful 2010 which saw a 32.4% growth, according to the semi-official China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Growth in sales in the first quarter of 2010 fell below CAAM’s predictions especially due to extreme rise in world oil prices as well as the earthquake calamity which left hundreds dead in Japan.

Everyone has been waiting in anticipation for Daimler to post its performance in the US market, especially after its rivals BMW, Volkswagen and Audi have all spread word about their share of the American pie. But, as anyone would expect from one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, the German based marquee has done pretty nicely in the States the previous month. Actually, it’s one of the company’s best yet in the land of the free.
Having sold exactly 22,971 Mercedes-Benz and Smart units combined, last month’s sales are up by 11 percent compared to March of 2010. That brings the number of new Mercedes-Benz owners in the States to 55,995, thus solidifying the record breaker that Daimler has set in US market history.
So what units performed last month in terms of sales? The best-selling continue to be the C and E classes, which posted increases of 6,542 units (8.9 percent) and 6,107 units (21.1 percent) respectively compared to 2010 figures. Another surprise comes with the brand’s Sprinter vans which grossed 175.1 percent year-versus-year after selling 1,062 units last month alone. Meanwhile, Smart managed to sell at least 425 units. That, however, was a 37.2 percent decrease as compared to the previous year.

Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: “After a strong start into the new year, our sales continued to develop positively in February. We were once again able to grow in many markets — particularly in Asia, but also in the U.S., and the other BRIC countries. We expect sales to get another boost in the coming weeks from a number of new products. After premiering at the Geneva Motor Show, the new generation of the high-volume C-Class and the new SLK will hit dealer showrooms at the end of March. The customer response to these two vehicles has already been fantastic.” Starting from summer, additional momentum will be generated by the new C-Class coupe, which also celebrated its premiere in Geneva. Dr. Schmidt: “Based on our recent success, we expect sales to grow significantly in the first quarter, putting us on track to achieve a new sales record in 2011.”

Mercedes Aims For Top Spot In India By Yearend

india2011 Mercedes Aims For Top Spot In India By Yearend

Acknowledging that it does not control the top spot in terms of cars sales in India, Mercedes-Benz has declared that it may again do so by the end of the year. Stating that overall car sales went up over 30 per cent last year, Dieter Zetsche Mercedes Benz chairman added that “I’m proud to say that our sales force in India performed even better in 2010 and increased our sales here by as much as 80 per cent.”

BMW has been the acknowledged leader for the past years in India but Mercedes’ optimism is grounded in fact. Current market conditions are predicting upticks in sales and in January of this year, Mercedes sold 640 units, compared to 500 plus for BMW and around 480 for Audi. The Mercedes-Benz brand was in the top spot three years ago but BMW found the momentum to overtake its German rival since then. German manufacturers dominate the top spots in the Indian car market.

Mercedes is also looking forward to the holding of the Indian Grand Prix later in the year. As Mercedes has a strong Formula One team, Mercedes’ presence in this premier automotive race will be an unprecedented marketing opportunity for the company in India. Company officials have stated that brand consciousness can only increase with this racing event, where BMW and Audi currently have no presence.
