For Improve Safety, Mercedes’ Presents the Active Seat-Belt Buckle

For Improve Safety Mercedes Presents the Active Seat Belt Buckle For Improve Safety, Mercedes Presents the Active Seat Belt Buckle

Most of the times, we think that buckling up is only for those seated on the front seats. If you’re seating at the back, and you are used to buckling up, then that’s great. However, surely, you are encountering one problem, the belts are difficult to look for as they tend to be hidden in the gaps under the upholstery.

That’s what Mercedes-Benz is trying to address when they made the active seat-belt buckle. This new system features a buckle that emerges from the upholstery once the rear doors are opened. This is made possible by an electric motor that activates and extends the seat belt buckle by 70cm.

Another great feature is the glowing insertion slot that can attract the passenger’s attention, which can encourage them and remind them to buckle up. The buckles are also easy to detach, so in case of emergency, the passengers can easily get out of the car.

It is expected that the active seat-belt buckle will be in production for Mercedes’ luxury models soon.

New M-Class Obtains Top European Safety Rating

Mercedes M Class EURO NCAP 597x447 New M Class Obtains Top European Safety Rating

Although it’s hardly a surprise and actually expected from a manufacturer of Mercedes’ caliber, the recently introduced M-Class has gotten a 5-star safety rating from European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

Specifically, the M-Class, received a 96% percent rating for adult occupant protection, with the large SUV receiving maximum ratings in the severe barrier test. For severe side pole impacts, protection of all body areas was rated as good, except in the chest area, where the given rating was adequate. Knee and femur protection ratings in a frontal impact were also rated as good.

Where the M-Class did not receive  good safety ratings was in child protection, due to the fact that the only way the front airbags could be disabled was by using the Mercedes-compatible CPOD system. Restraints not compatible with this sensor system had no way of disabling the front airbags, which can cause severe injury to children placed in rearward-facing restraints. Euro NCAP also faulted Mercedes’ speed limitation assistance system, which failed the test.

New B-Class Video Shows Stately Progression

Claiming that “No model change in the history of Mercedes-Benz has ever seen so many new developments introduced in one fell swoop”, Thomas Weber, Head of Development for Mercedes-Benz cars enthused about the safety features of the newly-launched B-Class. Though not as exciting to watch as the AMG stormers like the Black Series or SLS AMG, this footage of the new B-Class shows the packaging of the safety features that were of primary importance in the design of the vehicle.

What you see from the outside are the sleeker lines and distinctly Mercedes-Benz aura of the B-Class as it moves down the road. What is not immediately noticeable is the radar-based collision warning system with adaptive Brake Assist and the PRE-SAFE preventive occupant protection system, both of which are standard and new to this vehicle segment.

The new model also features direct injection and turbocharging, new diesel engine, dual clutch transmission, manual transmission and driver assist systems. The standard gas engine is a 1600 cc unit with 120 horsepower. Buyers can also opt for a larger displacement B200 with 156 horsepower. Diesel engines come with 110 horsepower in the B180 CDI and 136 hp in the B200 CDI.

New Climatic Tunnels Streamline MB Testing

In Sindelfingen, Mercedes-Benz inaugurated two climatic wind tunnels, which it will use to simulate extreme weather conditions for testing its cars. Following two years of construction, the two facilities will narrow the gap between simulations and real-life testing. The climatic wind tunnel is capable of producing temperatures of minus 40 to plus 60 degrees Celsius, hurricane-force winds of up to 265 km/h, heavy snowstorms and monsoon-like rain. The two tunnels perform separate functions, with one designated as the cold tunnel and the other one the hot tunnel, which can still generate temperatures of minus 10 to plus 60 C. Both tunnels are equipped with twin-axle roller dynamometers that allows speeds of up to 265 km/h.

Says Ulrich Mellinghoff, Head of Mercedes Safety Development, “We don’t want to use the new climatic wind tunnels as a substitute for road testing, but we can now do less of it and are also far better prepared when we do go out. For example, if we have 20 different engine heat shields, we can already eliminate many of them in the climatic wind tunnel because they don’t have the desired effect.”

The all-new Mercedes-Benz SLK and its safety system

2012 SLK Class Safety Medium 597x362 The all new Mercedes Benz SLK and its safety system
Early next year, Mercedes-Benz will launch the all-new 2012 SLK-Class. The agile sports car will feature a bold, new design, exceptionally high levels of comfort, as well as plenty of open-air driving pleasure. At the same time, it will also set new safety standards for convertible sports cars.

Just like with the SLS, MB has been posting their own spy-shots of the SLK and has revealed very specific details of the next-gen SLK glass roof. If you haven’t noticed, they are definitely playing the blogosphere, feeding us tidbits of the 3rd gen SLK before they reveal it next year.  It’s no surprise that they have released more info (below and in the pix) of the SLK and its safety standards. Using my amazing photoshop skills, I was able to reveal more of the actual SLK than what they wanted us to see. Check out the pix below and see for yourself.
