[F1] Mercedes Struggles in Spanish GP; Rosberg Finishes 6th as Alonso Wins

For the Mercedes AMG Petronas team, these strong qualifying performances coupled with disappointing results in the race proper should be very frustrating. That was the story at the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, where the Silver Arrows drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton started the race from the front row. Pole-sitter Rosberg managed to hold on to his lead for several laps before relinquishing it to eventual race winner Fernando Alonso, and Hamilton was out-muscled right from the get go into P4. By turn 1 of lap 13, Alonso finally makes his move on Rosberg and it was all downhill from there. Both drivers continued to struggle with their race pace…. Continue Reading »

[F1] Mercedes’ Rosberg and Hamilton to Start in Front Row of Spanish GP

Mercedes AMG Petronas showed it was ready. Silver Arrows drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton claimed a one-two finish in qualifying for the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix, which would give the team the front row at the starting grid for tomorrow’s race at the Circuit de Catalunya. Hamilton actually set the pace in the first two rounds of qualifying, but it was Rosberg who really stepped it up in Q3. Rosberg’s time was 1:20.718, with Hamilton just a shade slower at 1:20.972. Rosberg was P2 in Q1, while he was just P6 in Q2. That didn’t matter, though. All he needed was to get into Q3. This makes it Rosberg’s… Continue Reading »

[F1] New Hard Compound Tires Could Key Mercedes Improvement

For much of the first four races of the 2013 Formula One season, the Mercedes AMG Petronas team has struggled with their tires. As the European leg of the season kicks off this weekend with the Spanish Grand Prix, a tweaked Pirelli hard compound tire should help the team’s chances, along with some improvements to the car itself. Nico Rosberg said that the new tire “is closer to the operating window of the medium,” adding that the hards were the ones they found to be particularly problematic. For one, the old hard tires suffered from heavy graining during the team’s winter testing. The weather in Europe should also help the… Continue Reading »
