Superstars Series: Liuzzi Switches to Another Mercedes Team

Former Formula One driver Vitantonio Liuzzi will be transferring from one Mercedes-Benz team to another, as he continues on his superb stint in the Superstars International Series. He drove for CAAL racing in 2012  after being left without an F1 drive at his former team, HRT, and now he is set to switch to the Romeo Ferraris Mercedes team this year. Liuzzi, who drove a C63 AMG and finished as the runner-up to Audi’s Johan Kristofferson in 2012, will compete alongside Thomas Biagi, who was the 2010 driver champion for both the Campionato Italiano Superstars and the International Superstars Series. “I’m ready for a new challenge after an intense 2012… Continue Reading »

F1: Hamilton Runs 113 Laps, Gets Second-Fastest Time in Barcelona Day 1

In the afternoon of day 1 of a new round of preseason Formula 1 testing in Barcelona, Lewis Hamilton of the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team managed 1:24:348, which might not be all that close to the top time set by Mark Webber (1:22.693) but was still good enough for second best during the day. That was just part of the day-leading 113 laps Hamilton completed on the F1 W04. Over the entire outing, Hamilton totaled 526 kilometers. The team focused on evaluating their tires for wet conditions during the morning, with further emphasis on getting a feel for the intermediate tires. For the afternoon runs, it was more of… Continue Reading »

F1: Paddy Lowe to Move to Mercedes in 2014

According to sources, McLaren F1 technical director Paddy Lowe will not be joining the team at the 2013 season opener on March 17 at the Australian Grand Prix. What’s more, he is set to join the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team once his contract with McLaren expires at the end of the year. This casts more doubt on the future of current Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, who had stated that Lowe won’t be on the team while Brawn remains at the helm. Then again, it’s not a given that Lowe’s move is going to make Brawn leave. New motorsport director Toto Wolff could be working some magic behind the… Continue Reading »

Kubica Test-Drives DTM Mercedes-Benz AMG C-Coupé

It’s been a while for former F1 driver Robert Kubica, but his latest step brings him closer to a motorsport comeback. A couple of days back, Kubica — who was severely injured in February 2011 at the Ronde di Andora rally — tested a DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé. His run at the Circuit Ricardo Torno in Valencia, Spain is his first proper test-condition outing on a race track since being a part of Renault in Formula One back in early 2011. “I’m really pleased that Mercedes-Benz is giving me the opportunity to test their DTM car and I’m looking forward to getting acclimatised to a race car again,” said Kubica prior to the… Continue Reading »

‘Smart Buggy’ Bid for 2013 Dakar Rally Fails

It’s never a good thing when a dream fizzles out, and it can hurt much more considering we’re about to say goodbye to 2012 as well. That’s just what Jose Luis Alvarez has to deal with as he bids his 2013 Dakar Rally bid goodbye. Alvarez and his team was set to take a couple of smart ForTwos to the rally. These are definitely heavily modified to perform on a rally competition and to comply with FIA rules for said event, and many would argue that perhaps the vehicles are merely rally cars with a smart shell, but it’s still a smart, anyway. Right now, though, all that is moot…. Continue Reading »
