SLS AMG E-Cell Set for 2013 Release

2013 SLSAMG ECell 597x397 SLS AMG E Cell Set for 2013 Release

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its all-electric supercar, the SLS AMG E-Cell, is going to be ready at dealerships waiting to be purchased by wealthy, environment-friendly connoisseurs sometime in 2013. No details have been revealed about pricing and exact dates, but the confirmation that the SLS AMG will legitimately be sold at dealerships should be enough for now.

The 525 hp vehicle is powered by four rear-mounted electric motors, and it will require a mere 3.9 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph. That’s quite a good figure considering the gasoline SLS AMG takes just a shade faster to accomplish the same feat.

A number of revisions were made to accommodate the electrice powertrain, such as a redesigned front suspension, and the vehicle is heavier than its standard counterpart by a good 800 lbs.

The SLS AMG E-Cell sports a citrus color scheme called “AMG lumilectric magno,” which is reminiscent of Day-Glo yellow. While it is certainly an acquired taste, the electric supercar is nonetheless attractive because of it. See you in 2013, then.

Mercedes-Benz, Audi to Double Diesels for North American Market

At this point, thanks to various advances in technology, all of the stigmas faced by diesel vehicles in the past are being dispelled. Lacking in power? Spewing thick dark clouds of smoke? Rumbling engine noises? The image of the diesel segment is changing, and automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and Audi are keen on capitalizing on this. Both of the German automakers are setting up to double their diesel vehicle offerings in the US market, as more Americans are being keen on getting diesel-powered rides thanks to the new advantages.

Take it from Tom Brown, a retired Lieutenant Commander from the Navy who is currently residing in Hillsborough, North Carolina. “I started out with a diesel tractor. Having that familiarity led me to look more closely at the passenger vehicles. The new clean diesels are quiet, efficient, and the fuel is available, so I don’t see much downside.” American musician and actress Cher also purchased a Mercedes-Benz diesel recently after owning a Lexus hybrid.

Mercedes-Benz and Audi are lagging behind in the electric hybrid segment, far from leader Toyota and its luxury imprint Lexus. That’s why they turn to the diesel segment. According to a Mercedes-Benz official, the brand no longer needs to even push diesel to the consumers, since they themselves realize that diesel is the way to go—at least until those other alternative-power vehicles gain more traction. “Our expansion is being driven by customer demand. The customers who have tried diesel don’t want to switch back,” added the official.

RENNtech, one of the premiere Mercedes-Benz tuners, had been providing some CLK 63 Black Series one-off carbon fiber aerodynamic add-ons to a select group of people such as Indy Racing driver Tony Kanaan. Now, the company is making these upgrades available to the general public, mainly due to interest and demand from consumers.

The carbon fiber aero add-ons available include the following: a full-carbon fiber front splitter ($2,450) for that aggressive styling up front, increased brake cooling and improved handling via additional downforce; front air ducts ($1,250) that increase air flow to the brakes for better cooling and reduced pad wear and brake fade; a redesigned full-carbon air box ($2,795) with a new carbon vacuum chamber box, optimizes path of airflow and increases volume as well, up to 10hp added; rear diffuser ($3,250) that increases downforce and reduces drag, plus it also redirects air to help the rear differential oil cooler; a carbon DTM adjustable rear wing ($3,350) for improved styling plus increased downforce and stability; and front && rear adjustable camber bushings ($1,250 for front, $954 for rear) for adjustable handling to accommodate a variety of tracks as well as driving styles. The individual parts are available in gloss or matte finish.

As you can see from the prices of those aero upgrade components, there was really a reason why they remained exclusive options until now. Still, one can’t argue with the effort and engineering it took to come up with these carbon fiber upgrades.

Mercedes-Benz Rides Chinese and US Demand, Gets 15.3-Percent Sales Growth

According to an official statement from Stuttgart, Mercedes-Benz has reportedly managed a year-on-year worldwide sales growth of 15.3 percent. This figure is due largely to the demand from the Chinese market as well as in the United States.

Over the past year, Mercedes-Benz totaled 1.16 million vehicles sold, which subsequently allowed Daimler AG, Mercedes-Benz’s parent company, to exceed its projections that involved a 10-percent growth across the board from Merc to Maybach, the uber-luxury vehicle brand, to Smart, with its compact urban cars. Overall, Daimler was able to sell 1.26 million vehicles from the three makes—a 12-percent increase from 2009′s numbers.

“Last year was a complete success for us,” stated Dieter Zetsche, Daimler AG chairman and the head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We have grown stronger as the world-wide market for passenger cars and as a result can win market share.”

While the annual increase is very impressive on its own, the consistency by which this growth was achieved is also quite amazing. Globally, Mercedes-Benz was able to experience double-digit growth on a monthly basis. In China, Merc experienced exceeded double of their annual sales from 2009. In the US, sales increased by 14 percent over the year.

Aside from the numbers showing Mercedes-Benz’s strong year, the sales growth is a reflection of the global automotive market’s recovery, particularly the premium or luxury car segment. These figures are clear indicators of the rebounding market. Zetsche says the brand can start 2011 with confidence, thanks to a competitive product range and numerous new products.”

What better way for one brand associated with style and luxury than to be part of the Gentlemen’s Quarterly, or GQ, magazine’s Best-Dressed List 2011 edition? That’s right—Mercedes-Benz is the primary sponsor for said list, which was published on the January 6 release if the UK edition of the men’s magazine.

The Best-Dressed List is basically a 36-page supplement that showcases the UK’s top male style icons, and it includes a special photo session that was held at Mercedes-Benz World. The shoot featured such vehicles as the SLS AMG Gullwing along with the 1950s-era 300SL Gullwing, plus British musician Alex James.

The list is populated by a number of figures from different industries, including Formula One drivers, hip-hop icons, aristocrats and actors. GQ aims to showcase “the best a man can be” through the different styles exhibited by each individual on the list.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to work so closely with GQ to produce this nationally recognised list,” said Mercedes-Benz Vars managing director Gary Savage. “GQ’s brand values, the readership and the high production values of the magazine are the perfect fit for Mercedes-Benz customers. Style and exquisite design are at the heart of the Mercedes-Benz brand, which is why we’re passionate about people who understand, create and define timeless elegance.”
