An all-women team will be representing Mercedes-Benz Classic in the upcoming Mille Miglia. According to Daimler, race car driver and new brand ambassador of “She’s Mercedes” Susie Wolff will be riding in the cockpit of a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198) with the legendary driver Ellen Lohr who is the only woman to ever win a DTM race. The company said that the decision to have the two women represent Mercedes is to highlight the “She’s Mercedes” program. RM Sotheby’s will have a special item up for sale next month, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Sportabteilung’ Gullwing, as shown on a gtspirit.com report. This unique car is among the four units in the world designed for racing. It was able to place second at the Tour de France in 1955 with Sir Stirling Moss in the driver’s seat. The car was named ‘Sportabteilung’ since the competition department of Mercedes-Benz completed this 300 SL. Instead of using the lightweight alloy typically used on a standard car, it comes with a standard steel body to increase its strength against stress normally associated with competitive driving. A 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL met an accident during the legendary Mille Miglia of this year, according to a report from autoevolution.com. The Gullwing lost a good number of its original parts following an accident during the Italian vintage car race. The accident also involved a BMW 1 Series, which left the vintage Mercedes-Benz vehicle in virtually destroyed the Gullwing. The winding road along Viterbo was the site of the accident, which was close to Rome. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined. Alan Wilder revealed the historical value of the car when he made it available in the market. He is selling the vehicle two years after a number of memorabilia of the English group were put up for sale by the musician.
