Bad luck befalls Mercedes at 2018 Austrian GP

There was no silver lining for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team at the 2018 Austrian GP. Lewis Hamilton retired from the race with just eight laps to go, following loss of fuel pressure in his car. Coupled with Ferrari driver and title contender Sebastian Vettel finishing third, Hamilton will now be a point behind the title standings heading into the British Grand Prix in the next weekend. Max Verstappen won the race. The Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen followed in second place and the other Ferrari of Vettel rounded out the podium. It looked like it was going to be a comfortable one-two finish for Mercedes. However, lady luck had… Continue Reading »

Hamilton takes first career pole in Suzuka

Lewis Hamilton achieved his first-ever career pole position at the Suzuka circuit, giving him an edge heading into the 2017 Japanese Grand Prix, where he expects another good battle with the Ferrari team. Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas was actually second-fastest in qualifying, but he will be slapped with a five-place grid penalty. This bumps Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel up to the front row. The Red Bulls qualified next, followed by Kimi Raikkonen in the other Ferrari. Raikkonen, however, will also be given a five-place gearbox penalty. It was a record-breaking qualifying session for Hamilton, who shattered the track record of 1:28.95 held previously by Michael Schumacher. He had already been close… Continue Reading »

Bottas 2nd while Hamilton struggles in Azerbaijan GP

The Azerbaijan GP was certainly a very wild and chaotic race. Valtteri Bottas drove his Mercedes to second place right at the last possible moment heading into the chequered flag, ahead of Lance Stroll’s Williams car and behind the race winner, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Bottas went behind Stroll’s slipstream at the final straight and overtook just ahead of the chequered flag. It was a fitting finish to the very wild race which saw yellow flags, a red flag, and a lot of contact between cars. It was surely disappointing to lose second place for Stroll, but Williams can’t be that sad about achieving the team’s first podium this season…. Continue Reading »

Mercedes swaps crew personnel for Rosberg and Hamilton

In a move that is expected to help the team, Mercedes has swapped around several members of its drivers’ crew personnel. There are several differences between the Silver Arrow cars this season. The decision was made by the team to swap number one mechanics for 2016. New personnel turnover also paved the way for other swaps. There are no changes to the engineering personnel, however. Nico Rosberg praised the moves, saying that it can only help both drivers. “It’s good for the wider strength of the team to move people around and not have them become focused on a single car or driver,” said the German, who has come in second… Continue Reading »
