There had been reports that Daimler is axing the Maybach brand because of low sales. And when companies are in the brink of losing a product or a line, what they normally do is to put up the items on sale and put huge discounts to get things going. But this is not the case with Maybach.

In fact, Daimler decided to increase the line’s prices to $4,000 across the board, which is a different business decision. Well, hopefully, this move will work out and there will still be some people who will be willing to shell out additional dough for a this limo.

Mercedes Axes Maybach Brand

With chairman Dieter Zetsche’s recent decision to stop development of the replacement models for the Maybach 57 and 62, the writing was on the wall for this historical brand which represented the ultimate luxury vehicle only the very rich could afford. In its golden days, a Maybach was the carriage that ferried princes, statesmen and captains of industry on their forays. The German manufacturer must have had high hopes for this ultra-luxury brand, but this did not turn out to be the case. With dismal sales and internal studies which found that an upmarket Mercedes S-Class could better bring the fight to the Maybach’s rivals, the decision to axe the brand was just another business reality.

Mercedes will continue to produce Maybachs until early 2013, after which the new S-Class is expected to take over. A Pullman version is rumored to be in the works, so Maybach followers will still have this option if an S-Class is too cramped for them. The original Maybachs made their names by concentrating on their builder’s design and engineering strengths. Sadly, today’s highly competitive environment means that the primary consideration must be the bottom line.

Imagine Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow brought to life. Then smart cars climbing the facades of skyscrapers and Maybach as the luxury carriage of Cinderella. Well, you can see all of that – in the 2011 Los Angeles Design Challenge at least.

Silver Lightning : Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow

The film is set in the near future, starring two crash test dummies who will try to save Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow from the hands of the evil Dr. Crash Barrier. They will be engaged in action packed scenes until of course, the Silver Arrow is saved.

Cinderella: Maybach Berline

Sindelfingen, Germany’s designers made the Maybach car as a luxury carriage with full suspension from the 17th century. This will be for the remake of the lovable movie, Cinderella.

Annie : smart 341 Parkour

The plot is the film “Annie get the Grannies”. In this story, Annie Angle read a newspaper about the incredible robots that disappeared. She set off, with a camera, to investigate her smart 341 Parkour.

The challenge is trying to find the greatest film car for Hollywood and of course, Mercedes-Benz Advanced Studios in Germany and Carlsbad, USA joined screenwriters for this project. It is a part of the Los Angeles Design Conference which will happen on November 16 to 17 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Daimler-Aston Martin Talks On Maybach Future Halted

Talks on the proposed partnership between Maybach and Aston Martin have apparently been halted due to unreasonable demands from one of the parties. You may recall that Daimler and Aston Martin have been in talks for several months now to build the next range of models for the struggling Maybach brand. Aston Martin would have gotten access to several technologies from the German manufacturer, notably the M- and S-Class platforms plus the 4.6-liter biturbo V8. These would have provided a big boost to Aston Martin’s development of the Lagonda.

Instead, Daimler has announced the cessation of the talks because of Aston Martin’s demands for money. While this development is not the nail on the coffin of the Maybach brand, it does narrow the options for the ultra-luxury marque, which has not performed to par. The German carmaker has been making noises about the possibility of producing Maybachs inhouse, so that is obviously under more serious consideration.

If you have begun to notice that Mercedes-Benz seems to have a penchant for the number 125 these days, it’s because it’s celebrating that anniversary this year. And through the decades, Mercedes-Benz has established itself as the premier purveyor of luxury automobiles with unequalled engineering excellence. And in celebrating its 125th, what better way would there be to remind people of the company’s luxury heritage than to present an Edition 125 from Maybach?

Produced to showcase the individualization options available to Maybach customers, the Edition 125 can be ordered with reclining seats in the rear, Swarovski accents, a front/rear partition and, in a nod to modernity, a 19-inch high-res screen plus a wireless Internet connection.

No groundbreaking features are being introduced for the exterior, except for a two-tone finish and 20-inch wheels. It’s a pity that Maybach’s future direction is not as clear cut as the other Daimler brands, because this brand certainly had been the epitome of luxury in decades past.
