Mercedes Spending Billions To Fast-Track Alternative Powertrain Development

hybridS400 Mercedes Spending Billions To Fast Track Alternative Powertrain Development

Despite its luxury stature, it cannot be said that Mercedes-Benz is a ponderous company, and it is light on its feet when distinguishing trends that will be good for the company and its customers. A case in point is the company’s decision to bring to market 8 new diesel variants in the next few years. There is also the reported fast-track development of several hybrids for Mercedes’ primary markets. A news item in an industry publication reports that Mercedes-Benz is looking to introduce C-, E- and S-Class hybrid variants in the coming three years. Apart from recognizing the market potential of hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles, the move aims to prepare the company for tightening fuel-economy legislation in both the U.S. and Europe. The diesel and hybrid combination should provide Mercedes-Benz with the figures they need to attain the required corporate average fuel economy.

While Europe can expect these gas/electric hybrids to appear in C- and E-Class vehicles by 2013, North American buyers will have to wait for half a year to see these cars in their local showrooms.

Mercedes is reportedly spending almost 3 billion dollars on researching and developing alternative powertrains. This is according to Herbert Kohler, the company’s head of E-Drive and future mobility.

Mercedes-Benz To Come Out With AMG Hybrids In The Near Future

Audi has their E-tron concept cars and BMW their ActiveHybrid. Porsche introduced the Cayenne Hybrid last year and the 918 RSR this year. There can be no doubt now that the green revolution has reached the domain of sports and luxury cars. Once the domain of cars like the Toyota Prius, vehicles with electric propulsion and alternative fuel technologies are now mass-market commodities that are gaining wide acceptance. Even Porsche tuner Ruf has joined the bandwagon with their eRuf 911.

With Mercedes-Benz showing the neon-colored SLS AMG E-Cell at the North American International Automobile Show, the company has shown that it is seriously looking at this new technology and its application to sports cars in particular. Rumors are now going around that Mercedes in-house tuner AMG is looking to mate its sporty gasoline engines with a hybrid arrangement involving electric motors.

Herbert Kohler, future mobility and advanced engineering department head has stated that “AMG vehicles in the coming years will be available as hybrids. The AMG family will still be about performance, but – like every other automaker under the sun – fuel consumption is a constant part of engineering discussions going forward”.

With this kind of official statement, the future of high-performing sports hybrids is assured and that Mercedes-Benz will come out with the products that will suit the luxury market.

2012 ML-Class Spotted in the Wild

The upcoming Mercedes Benz ML-Class has been spotted testing in the wild, and with it comes a lot of speculation for the SUV. It appears to be a cross between a G-Class and an R-Class, and the company has already said that the ML-Class will be focusing more on efficiency instead of performance.

Due sometime in mid-2011, there are yet to be any concrete details leaked about the new car. All of the speculation has so far been based on the previous spy shots of the vehicle. There are even some reports that hint at an ML-Class powered by a hybrid diesel and electric power train. Of course, there’s the ML450 Hybrid that’s expected to be launched sometime in 2011 as well, featuring a gasoline electric hybrid power source.

The Euro ML models are slated to get 204-horsepower 2.2L four-cylinder engines, with planned V6 gasoline engines also said to be in the works. There will also likely be an AMG variant that carries a 5.5L twin-turbo direct-injection V8 that should be good for 570hp at the very least.

The leading consumer 4×4 in the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup should be officially unveiled by the time the 2011 Geneva Show comes around in March. Whether we’ll also see a reported plug-in hybrid version of the ML450 Hybrid is another question.

B-Class F-Cell Now Available For Lease

Orders for the 2011 B-Class F-Cell hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle started to be accepted last month and Mercedes-Benz has now announced that the cost of leasing the hydrogen-powered car is at a steep $849 – monthly.

The lease, which runs for a 3-year period, includes the cost of the hydrogen fuel (which is not exactly easy to find) and insurance. Only 70 cars will be available for lease in the greater Los Angeles region and the San Francisco Bay Area. Similar cars in various European countries and elsewhere will form part of a larger global fleet for these unique vehicles. Only a few private customers in the U.S. will get to lease these cars as Mercedes-Benz wants to target fleet operators, public figures, and other institutions to drive its hybrid showpiece.  Even Governor Arnol Schwarzenegger has stated, in a hydrogen conference last spring, that “I would love one of these fuel-cell powered Mercedes cars!”

The B-Class F-Cell forms the second generation of vehicles being tested by the company in the States, following a fleet of A-class cars that formed the initial test fleet, starting in 2004. Test fleets such as these provide manufacturers with invaluable and real-world data on how new powertrain technologies hold up in the real world.

The B-class F-cell has a range of around 250 miles on a full tank, which holds 9 lbs of hydrogen. The fuel cell and lithium-ion battery are housed in a floor structure for safety and efficiency.  Performance comparable to 2-liter gasoline engine is delivered by the 100-kilowatt motor. With these figures, the B-class F-cell gives two times the range yet uses up 30 percent less hydrogen than the previous hydrogen-powered A-class. Plus, there is also a 30-percent increase in power.

According to the EPA, comparative calculations made by the agency give the B-class F-cell’s mileage at 54 miles per gallon. Not a bad for a vehicle that will assuage your guilt feelings for having that SLS in the garage.

Lorinser retrofits the Smart Fortwo

If you’re used to driving a compact, then you’re probably surrendered to the fact that your car was built for economy and lightness, and it was designed to do as little harm to the environment possible. That is, if you’re secretly wishing for more power and drivability—something almost forbidden around the ecomodder circle. Well, here’s news for you. Lorinser has just proven that it’s not all engine displacement that serves as basis as to whether a car deserves to be pimped out or not. As long as your compact is cool, then they’re cool with it—as exemplified by their latest creation.

Presenting Sportservice Lorinser’s Easybrid. It’s no more than a Smart Fortwo on steroids—electric steroids, that is. The stock electric motor has been replaced with a 30kW retrofit. A little bit of history here, folks. Ferdinand Porsche (yes, the founder of Porsche) was one of the pioneers who tried out placing electric motors around the wheel hubs. That’s why such devices were known to be called “hub motors”. Well, anyway, hub motors were thought to be destined for the failures’ lot, but nevertheless brought back to greatness later on when fuel prices started rising and environmental awareness caught up with everybody.

Anyways, the point is soon there’ll be a whole line of compact cars that will be retrofitted with hybrid drivetrain technologies. Hey, the Fortwo caught Lorinser’s eyes, didn’t it?
