No Hybrid or Diesel Versions For Mercedes SL

2013 sl 597x330 No Hybrid or Diesel Versions For Mercedes SL
In keeping with the “Sport Light” badging that the model represents, Mercedes has decided that the new 2013 SL will not be offered in hybrid or diesel versions. As Mercedes has often enough reminded us, the new SL sports extensive aluminum structures and components. The resulting car is significantly lighter than its predecessor while being substantially stiffer by 20 percent.

And to make the best of that rigidity and lightness, Mercedes has deemed that the engines worthy of the SL badging should be powered by no less than a 3.5 liter V6 in the SL 350 and an twin turbo, 430 horsepower V8 in the SL 500. The latter engine is more than 10% more powerful than the SL 500 of the previous SL model. Lighter, stiffer and more powerful. No prizes for guessing which car would be more fun to drive. And it that’s not enough, there’s always the AMG version that’s sure to follow, which will offer 500 horsepower at the minimum.

I-opener: AMG ends all speculations on Pagani C9′s powerplant

zonda2spy6 597x376 I opener: AMG ends all speculations on Pagani C9s powerplant

Sometimes, you just have to nip expectations or speculations in the bud to tame people’s over-excitement down before they grow out of proportion. Otherwise, you’re going to have a lot of disappointed fans out there who’ll be less than interested in your new toys. That is why both Mercedes-Benz and Pagani decided to make it clear to everyone out there that no—the up-and-coming Pagani C9′s V12 engine will have absolutely nothing to do with the current V12 that’s rocking the SL65 AMG Black Series. Although it’s AMG that is solely responsible for developing the engine that’s going to rid each and everyone of the Pagani C9′s competition, the tuner was quite steadfast saying that the engine they’re working on was something borne out of a Mercedes engine, and not necessarily something similar.

To end all rumors, AMG says the V12 that resides under the Black Series’ hood is capable of 670hp and 730lb-ft. That motor is a hyped up version of the V12 that’s powering the base SL65 AMG. The engine that’s screaming from behind the C9′s cockpit? That’s not the same engine, or any derivative of the aforementioned engines whatsoever. It’s totally different, and that is where their statement ends? So we’re all pretty much left guessing what it really is. But does it really matter once you’re inside the C9?

V8 power in the new CL63 AMG

Who doesn’t want to feel the brain crushing mindless power of a V8 engine? We know we do, but you’ve got to admit that it doesn’t come free of charge. With that kind of power comes great responsibility, and some great deal of financial capability.

Take the up and coming 2011 CL63 AMG for example. Both its coupe and sedan variants are soon to roll out of Mercedes-Benz’s production lines, and so the company has announced publicly their base prices. The coupe’s price tag will begin at $151,125, while the sedan version will fetch you $138,875 at the least. Of course, you’ll have the option of getting the AMG Performance Package to come with your car. That will give it around 563hp and 664lb-ft torque.

The 2011 CL550 4MATIC however won’t enjoy that much power. Bearing a price tag of $114,025, the 4.6-liter V8 engine sitting under its hood will only be capable of 429hp and 516lb-ft torque. Still, that’s a lot of power if you’ve never come face to face with an eight banger engine. Although it’s 20 percent less in displacement than the CL550′s current engine, it ups the ante with 12 percent more hp and 32 percent more torque. This improves fuel efficiency by as much as 10 percent, which is quite a lot considering the bump in power.

The AMG variant, meanwhile, is blessed with direct injection and start-stop technologies, giving it as much as 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. Now, that’s a lot.

Superchips presents remapped ECU for C350 CDi BlueEFFICIENCY

mercedes benz c350 cdi 597x427 Superchips presents remapped ECU for C350 CDi BlueEFFICIENCY
The Brits really got it going on with their tuning prowess as Superchips presents their latest take on the Mercedes-Benz C350 CDi BlueEFFICIENCY. They have now released a remapped ECU boosting power up by 34 bhp and 80 Nm. The new ECU is applicable to all variants of the C, E, M and R and S-Class models, and has been verified through intense road, chassis and dyno testing.

The Superchips ECU will give you an additional 34 bhp at 3,008 rpm, thus giving you a maximum power of 284 bhp, as opposed to 250 bhp in stock form. But unlike most ECU’s that bump the power while sacrificing drivability, Superchips says theirs gives you maximum power anywhere from 2,700 to 4,400 rpm. Torque has been spread out from 642 Nm at 2,469 rpm to a maximum of 2,549 Nm at 3,009 rpm. That should give your right foot enough room to handle all the power.

With a balance in power and drivability, Superchip’s remapped ECU should result in a more edgier driving experience, with sharper acceleration and throttle response. Heck, it gives you enough power not only to overtake but to tow as well. But even with all that power, the engine will still feel smooth as silk. It’s now available for GBP 445. That pricetag includes installation and taxes and should be applicable for all models from June 2009 onwards.

AMG 5.5-liter biturbo motor outperforms naturally-aspirated V8

Performance, fuel economy, less emissions—is it too much to ask for all three? Not quite, and Mercedes-Benz makes sure that their loyal customers get what they deserve. Their latest engine, the new AMG 5.5-liter biturbo engine, combines all three characteristics and puts them in one neat package. AMG’s new engine delivers up to 563 horsepower and 664 lb-ft torque.

With all that power comes with a host of cutting edge technologies to make it one of the most advanced engines in the world. It features direct gasoline injection, twin turbochargers, air-water intercooling, plus Mercedes-Benz patented Controlled Efficiency stop-start function. Excited? Well, you got to wait around until November this before you see it under the hood. Most likely, it’ll be a 2011 AMG CL that’s going to be flaunting this new engine.

The trend that Mercedes-Benz is following is definitely one that seeks to improve efficiency with smaller displacements. Case in point is the new 5,461 cc engine that 747 cc smaller than the AMG 6.3-liter V8. The thing is, even with a lower displacement, Mercedes-Benz was able to bump up output of the new engine to exceed that of its ancestor. Throw the AMG Performance Package into the mix and you get as much as the aforementioned performance figures. It’s torque curve will virtually blow away other engines in the same power class.

The new engine boasts a 27-percent improvement in fuel economy. Considering that it’s a biturbo motor that can outperform the naturally aspirated V8, it’s one hell of a wonder. This is definitely one of the strongest selling points of CL63 AMG.
