Can’t get enough of Smart cars? Then the place to be is Berlin. The place is crawling with these cars, which according to Daimler aim to take over a big slice of the city’s growing urban auto per-minute rental pie. Just last month, Daimler decided to deploy the largest fleet of its Car2go short-term rental service program, turning a blind eye to BMW’s own DriveNow two-to-one service. It’s all part of a grand scheme to lure in not only drivers in Berlin but in urban regions across Europe in the midst of fading interest in car ownership. Car2go chief Robert Henrich shares that “it’s natural that competition shows up. It shows… Continue Reading »

Electric drive company Protean Electric displayed what it calls the “Technology Project Hybrid” at the 2012 Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress held in Detroit. The car uses a Brabus Mercedes-Benz E-class that comes with a 2.2L turbodiesel engine and a manual transmission. What makes the car special are the Protean electric motors that have been fitted into the rear wheels of the car. The vehicle makes use of Protean Electric’s patented in-wheel system called Protean Drive. These electric-drive systems are designed to provide vehicles with increased power, more torque, improved handling, and of course, much better fuel economy. The electric motors each produce 110 horsepower along with 590 lb.-ft…. Continue Reading »
For Mercedes-Benz’s 125th anniversary, the company came out with the F125 concept. To many, it was a confusing concept car to celebrate the company’s glorious 125 years. But recently, Thomas Weber revealed that the F125, instead of looking back, is a vehicle that looks forward. In fact, two generations forward. So now, the ultralight materials, hydrogen fuel system and electric drive make sense, as these are technologies that will be commonplace in the future. In fact, the rolling laboratory nature of the F125 means that unheard-of and experimental technologies will be the norm for the F125 and its successors. In the more immediate future, it’s not far-off that an S-Class… Continue Reading »
Is Mercedes-Benz prepping a new low-end Gullwing? Well according to AutoExpress, Mercedes has plans to bring a new SLK Gullwing to the masses, which may look very similar to its bigger brother, the SLC Gullwing. Besides having some amazing gullwing doors, and draw inspiration from the legendary 300SL, it is also supposed to be hybrid. With some very muscular lines, it will be a big change compared to the current SLK (which women love to drive). The hood is much longer and due to the gullwing doors, the side sills will be much higher than on normal cars. The designers actually took that weakness and turned it into an opportunity….
