E-Class Superlight Arriving In 2015

superlight e class E Class Superlight Arriving In 2015

Announced late last year, Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that the E-Class Superlight will see the light of showrooms in 2015. In contrast to the 2013 SL which makes extensive use of aluminum to make it lighter, the E-Class Superlight will boast of a carbon fiber structure to achieve its target of being 350 kilos lighter than an E-Class made from today’s conventional materials.

Due to the properties of carbon fiber, new design concepts can be pursued, such as doing away with the B pillars, which would in turn give way to the possibility, even necessity, of having an E-Class with rear suicide doors. In keeping with the new age, high-tech use of aerospace materials, the E-Class Superlight will initially be powered by an F-Cell system. This would be in the form of a 150-horsepower hydrogen-powered engine coupled to a 50 horsepower electric motor. Later iterations would include plug-in EV drivetrains as well as fossil-fueled engines.

Mercedes is targetting 20,000 units annually once its starts production and of course, it’s too early to say how much these lightweight E-Classes will cost.

China Will Export the Mercedes E-Class

China Will Export the Mercedes E Class

The sales of the joint venture partner of Mercedes-Benz in China is whopping. Since the start of the year, the company has seen a 52% rise in the Chinese market, but it’s now going steady.

A report from Gasgoo says that the Chinese branch is trying to breakthrough the overseas market. In an attempt to do that, they are now exporting the Wheelbase E-Class. The car has been very popular and the management of BAIC says they know that this step may help them increase their 2012 sales. If this become successful the GLK and C-Class may also be exported.

Superlight E-Class Planned For 2015

German magazine Auto Bild reports that a superlight version of Mercedes’ current E-Class is in the works. Using carbon fiber structures, the lightweight E-Class is projected to be 350 kilos or 770 pounds lighter than the regular model. If your experience with carbon fiber is with body panels only, there’s no need to be apprehensive about the safety aspects of a lightweight E-Class. Properly designed carbon fiber can be more rigid than steel and of course, is much lighter. This is the reason the top classes of motorsports use this material extensively, and exotic car makers such as Lamborghini have started using carbon fiber structural components in its latest models.

Carbon structures in the E-Class will allow the removal of the B-pillar, which could pave the way for more radical designs, such as gullwing or sliding doors. The car’s lighter weight (projected at 1,300 kilos) will also benefit the car’s performance and handling, and will allow the use of much smaller engines for the fuel-sipping models. Scheduled for release in 2015, these superlight E-Classes will be produced in numbers of about 20,000 annually.

Despite its German-like name, Hess Motorsports is a US-based car customizing company which has released its take on the E350. Starting with a gloss-painted black body sedan body, Hess added a rear spoiler and applied Llumar black tint to the windows. Continuing with the all-black theme, Hess then replaced the standard wheels with 20-inch NC forged rims with black centers and a polished outer lip. The spoke design allows the brake rotors to show through, while the ride height has been adjusted with Eibach Pro springs to provide just the right clearance between the fenders and the Michelin low-profile PS2s.

Taken as a whole, Hess Motorsports has produced a version of the E-Class that is at home both as a boulevard cruiser and as a chariot of the rich and powerful.

Mercedes-Benz specialists at Brabus have spent a lot of time in the wind tunnel trying to come up with various ways to outclass everything that AMG has done to its sports cars. Whether it’s in the looks department or performance wise, these guys have always managed to outdo and come up with the unthinkable. Well, guess what? They’ve done it once again.

Their latest kit is meant for the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and includes a sporty lip which attaches to the stock AMG front apron. It’s designed to reduce lift at the front wheel axles to help stabilize corner steering and straight line driving at high speeds. There’s also the rear diffuser and spoiler mounted on the trunk’s lid as well as a central reflector. In line with AMG’s design, these have cutouts for the tailpipes on both sides to fit the stock exhaust or that of Brabus’ quad sport exhaust system.

There’s also the aerodynamic update for the E63 AMG. Brabus is offering a front spoiler lip, made of carbon fiber, of course, plus custom-tailored air ducts that give the side outlets of the AMG apron a more intense appearance.

Enough said, guys. Check out the gallery for the full preview.
