Paffett 2nd at Hockenheim, Fails to Clinch DTM Title

For all intents and purposes, the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season was Gary Paffett’s to lose. He had been leading all the way since the first race and was in good position to win it all at the final race despite watching Bruno Spengler chip away at his lead following dismal performances after the halftime break of the season. Well, Spengler was able to snatch the win—and the 2012 DTM driver’s championship as well—at Hockenheimring. DTM follows the FIA world championships points system, which awards 25 points to the winner and 18 points to the runner-up, then 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and 2 points to the rest of… Continue Reading »

Paffett to Start in P2 at DTM Finale

Mercedes-Benz driver Gary Paffett has been leading the drivers’ standings of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season since the first race, and he isn’t about to let his title chances slip away now. The man behind the wheel of the THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupe managed to finish qualifying at Hockenheim in second place, allowing him to start in the front row of the final race of the season. “Pole position was my goal, but still, I’m on the front row of the grid and so feel very relaxed about the last race of the season tomorrow,” Paffett said. “Now I’m looking forward to an exciting and fair season finale…. Driver Susie Wolff Retires From DTM Too

So Schumacher is retiring from F1 at season’s end. David Coulthard is too, at least in the DTM. But there’s one other Mercedes DTM driver who’s leaving the Mercedes DTM team, and that is Scottish lady driver Susie Wolff.  Wolff’s DTM debut was in 2006, where she did her first race with Mucke Motorsport. Straightaway, she showed her speed, finishing in the top ten. Her most successful DTM season was in 2010, when she got into the top seven twice, finishing 13th in the standings. But Susie leaving the DTM and her distinctive pink DTM Mercedes doesn’t mean that she is being put out to pasture. In fact, she already… Continue Reading »

Mercedes All Set for Climactic Battle at 2012 DTM Finale

It all comes down to one race. This weekend, the winners of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters will finally be crowned, and fans should be treated to a tight race on Sunday. Gary Paffett is hoping to take his THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupe to victory, although it’s not going to be easy with BMW’s Bruno Spengler hot on his trail and fellow Mercedes driver Jamie Green also with a shot at the title. Here’s how the drivers’ championship standings are right now: Paffett is leading at 127 points, Spengler is very close at 124 points, and Green has 109 points. Audi drivers Mike Rockenfeller (85 points) and Mattias Ekstrom… Continue Reading »

90s Mercedes DTM Technology More Like F1

In the 1990s, one of the premier motorsport series were the DTM races participated in by Opel, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz and eventually, BMW. At the time, the rules permitted a lot of technical innovation, which Mercedes and AMG wholly embraced in developing their DTM race cars. These technologies included active suspension, all-wheel drive, traction control, active aerodynamics, ABS and moveable ballast. And although engine displacements were limited to 2.5 litres, configurations allowed were any engines that were in production at the time. Mercedes-Benz’s weapon of choice for the 1994 and 1995 seasons were the W180/C220 C-Klasse sedans. Of course, after the factory race team was done prepping it, it had… Continue Reading »

DTM 2012: Zandvoort Preview

There’s four more races left in the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, and the whole Mercedes-Benz stable is gearing up to extend its lead in the three standings of DTM. After a bit of a disappointing showing in the last race at Nurburgring, the team is eager to bounce back. “Zandvoort is one of my favourite tracks on the DTM calendar,” said three-time winner Paffett, who is still leading the drivers’ standings by 20 points. “The track offers a good mix of fast and slow turns—this variety gives me a lot of pleasure as a driver, and so I’m really looking forward to climbing back into the cockpit just one… Continue Reading »

2012 DTM: Halfway Exhibition Events at Munich

We’ve reached the halfway point of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, which means it’s time to hit the Olympic Stadium in Munich for a reprisal of the non-championship scoring event that started last year. The Mercedes-Benz DTM teams are all preparing for the event, and looking to make it a springboard for more success for the latter half of the season. Right now, Mercedes-Benz is ahead of the pack in every aspect—after the first 5 races, the automaker is ahead in the constructors’ standings, Gary Paffett is at the top of the drivers’ points, and HWA Team is leading the teams’ championship. The 2-day event at the Olympic Stadium… Continue Reading »
