Want to see the latest of Daimler AG’s drivetrains and mobility concepts? Well, then you’ve got to get yourself on a plane to China for this year’s Shanghai World Expo 2010. Daimler is set to hug the limelight with their latest urban driving innovations.

Dr. Thomas Weber, a member of the Daimler Board of Management for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, spoke on the company’s behalf, giving hints on what to expect in Shanghai. Certainly, Daimler will be flaunting their latest electric vehicles, but the cherry on the icing would be the ‘flex mover’ concept that is part of their mobility project. It’s Daimler’s offer for the future’s individual mobility needs.

Daimler is also set to showcase several other projects, namely the smart electric drive model in an exhibit entitled “Road of Solution,” and the car2go project to be housed in the Urban Planet Pavilion. They’ll also be teaming up with Nestle to bring 20 smart “Swiss taxis” for visitors. You can either register in advance online or just flag one down in the Expo.

Ulrich Walker, Daimler Northeast Asia Chairman and CEO, says their involvement is testament to their commitment to working with China in leading sustainable mobility.

Mercedes-Benz gets double for Q1 2010 in China

It’s a very good year for Daimler AG as Mercedes-Benz sells more than double the units they sold in the first quarter of 2009. Sales shot up by 105% from January to March, with Mercedes-Benz becoming China’s most popular premium car brand.

Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Joachim Schmidt confirmed reports, and boasted their goal for 2010 which was to sell more than 100,000 passenger cars in China. This puts the country third on Mercedes-Benz’s largest markets list for 2010, trailing behind home-base Germany and the U.S. Back in 2009, China was a mere sixth.

As of the afternoon of April 23, 2010, Daimler AG stocks dropped by 0.56 percent, closing at $51.92. It previously closed at $52.21 the day before. It doesn’t bother the company though, after showing signs of recovery from last year. The automotive industry was in shambles last year, with two of Detroit’s Big Three car makers being forced into bankruptcy.

These latest developments puts Mercedes-Benz at a much favorable spot against its two main rivals in the premium car segment, fellow German car makers BMW and Audi. Now that they’ve penetrated China, Mercedes-Benz expects more growth with the introduction of limousines and multi-purpose vans.

Daimler AG’s seeds of trust and labor have borne fruit, and comes in the form of the new Mercedes-Benz Viano transporter. Fresh from the production lines of Fuzhou in the Fujian province of China, the Viano is the first customer vehicle of the partnership between Daimler AG, Fujian Motors Group (FJMG) and China Motor Corp. (CMC).

The joint venture, dubbed the Fujian Daimler Automotive (FJDA), started way back in 2007, is well accepted by the Chinese government and businessmen. Chairman of FJMG and FJDA, Mr. Lian Xiaoqing, appreciates the commitment of the employees plus the outstanding support given by both departments of government and FJDA shareholders.

Ulrich Walker, Daimler Northeast Asia Chairman and CEO, adds that the Mercedes-Benz Vito/Viano and Sprinter multipurpose vans are going to be a hit in China, where families and businessmen recognize the value of a high-quality, versatile vehicle. With China’s booming economy, the needs for such vehicles will rise, and the Vito/Viano and Sprinter will be there to lead the race.

As of current, the Vito/Viano and Sprinter model vehicles are assembled using as much as 40 percent of parts shipped from Chinese-based suppliers, and conform to Mercedes-Benz’s Production System standards of quality and efficiency.

Mercedes-Benz continues to post strong growth in China. The brand with the star was the fastest-growing premium brand in China in the year to date and will remain so for the full year as well. Already by September, sales of Mercedes-Benz had reached the same level as in all of 2008, and they are expected to increase by more than 60 percent in full-year 2009 compared to 2008. “We posted record sales in every month this year in China, and we will continue to grow dynamically there in the future,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We will expand our presence on the Chinese market next year as well, and we expect to continue to grow faster than the market as a whole. We also expect to receive a boost from the long wheelbase version of the new E-Class, which we will offer especially for the Chinese market from the middle of next year.”

Daimler’s businesses continue to grow in China. The company’s regional headquarters, Daimler Northeast Asia (DNEA) is managing record passenger car sales and vehicle financing, while continuing to expand joint venture activities.

“As the economy and middle class in China continue to expand, more consumers have been able to realize their desire to drive a Mercedes-Benz,” said Ulrich Walker, Chairman and CEO of Daimler Northeast Asia. “We’ve posted record sales for the first half of 2009 and just launched the all-new E-Class which already has 6000 pre-orders. Consumers throughout China can now finance a car or truck, and our joint venture in Beijing is building and selling a record number of vehicles. We will continue to do our best to expand our businesses as the economy continues to grow.”
