The B-Class, M-Class and C-Class Coupe Passed the NCAP Crash Test

Mercedes-Benz’ new car models, the B-, M- and C-Class Coupe were awarded the best in the crash test based on the European New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). Both the B- and the M- Class are the best in their categories while the C-Class Coupe got the prime rating of five stars for outstanding occupant protection.

Other Mercedes’ innovations were also given awards. The PRE-SAFE system, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST and ATTENTION ASSIST were recognized because of their benefits and the safety it can bring to riders or owners.

Ulrich Mellinghoff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Safety Development said, “The Euro NCAP awards are a striking recognition of the safety level of our vehicles, and we’re very happy about them,” he went further by saying, “But the standardized crash tests cover only a small part of the real course of events leading up to and during road accidents. For this reason

Mercedes-Benz designs all model series employing some 40 different accident constellations, most of which we define based on the experience of our in-house accident research. Additionally, focusing on anticipatory systems and accident avoidance we equip our vehicles with systems which are not even taken into account in the rating.”

C63 AMG Convertible Rendered By Enthusiast

Inspired by the C63 AMG that was shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, this rendering by a Mercedes enthusiast shows what a possible C63 convertible would look like with its top down.  User Tuvra at the Pistonheads forum is apparently artistic and proficient at Photoshop as the image above shows. If some of the elements of the design look familiar, it’s because the artist took inspiration from the rare Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM. Which is where the rear spoiler now apparently comes from.

But being a C63, it would certainly have the 6.3-liter V8 developed by AMG with an output of  almost 520 horsepower. That would certainly be more than enough to blow dry your hair on a sunny Sunday morning, with the 7-speed DCT transmission allowing you to just poke on the accelerator or do some fancy shifting yourself. Variants like these are a very real possibility, as a possible C63 sedan was recently seen testing, and who can forget the SLS convertible launched just a few months ago?

2012 DTM Car Unveiled By Schumacher And Rosberg

At the Frankfurt show, Mercedes has unveiled more than concept cars that may or may not see production. It also used the occasion for F1 drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg  to unveil the 2012  DTM C-Class Coupe.

Even standing still, this car is literally a silver arrow, because that is what the car’s exterior finish is. But that flashy exterior is just a cover for the serious engineering that Mercedes is known for in its racers and passenger cars.

A carbon fiber monocoque of advance design underpins the high-strength rollcage and energy-absorbing crash structures that protect the driver from all sides. These structures are needed, because the 4-liter V8 that powers this lightweight race car produces 500 horsepower and transfers it to a paddle-shifted, pneumatically operated sequential 6-speed. As with most race cars, a classic double-wishbone setup is employed.

Says Norbert Haug, VP for Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, “This new-generation vehicle, based on our Mercedes-Benz C- Coupe, signals the introduction of an even more spectacular racing car from the start of 2012. I am certain that the spectators will get their money’s worth from the three-way fight between Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the DTM next year.”

Mercedes To Lead Rival BMW In Sales Early Next Year

A top executive at Mercedes-Benz’s archrival BMW has admitted that Mercedes is on track to become the top-selling luxury carmaker by 2012.

This is because of Mercedes’ pace in introducing new models up to the end of this year and early next year. Jim O’Donnell, head of BMW’s U.S. division, concedes that while Mercedes will be coming out with a slew of models, BMW will still have to compete with older models, particularly in the segment where the C-Class and BMW’s 3-series compete head to head. Added O’Donnell, “In the first quarter of next year, I would say Mercedes will be No. 1.”

The new 3-series competitor to the C-Class is due in April of next year so until that time, the C-Class has only Audi’s offerings to seriously contend with. O’Donnell is retiring from BMW this year as part of the company’s mandatory age-60 retirement program, so his parting shot will not affect his employment status.

In a deal that must have left its rivals smarting, Mercedes Benz of India recently delivered 90 units of the new C-Class sedan to a single customer. This customer, Cars on Rent, now ups its fleet of Mercedes Benzes to 160. Servicing customers in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore, the additional order reflects the scale of the Indian market for luxury brands like Mercedes.

Commenting on the purchase, Cars on Rent Managing Director Rajiv Vij says that, “The demand for luxurious personal mobility solutions is rapidly on the rise. We partner with various International and Domestic Airlines, Hotels and Financial Services companies to service their High Flying guests. The brand value of Mercedes-Benz is unparalleled; as such it was our natural choice. The C-Class vehicles that we have in our fleet currently have proved to be extremely reliable even after clocking mileages in the range of 180,000 km. The low maintenance and excellent service support that we’ve had from Mercedes-Benz made our choice obvious. We see this trend growing in the future and already have in place a team dedicated towards serving the needs of corporate customers.”
