Ever been to India? It’s a beautiful country with a beautiful mixture of British and Indian cultures. And now, with Mercedes-Benz entering the foray, it’s even more astounding. Mercedes-Benz India recently started constructing a new facility to house body manufacturing of its city buses. What used to be a foundation plant in Chakan, whose founder is none other than Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and Chief Executive Office Wilfred Aulbur, will now be assisted in the production of city buses by this new facility in Pune.

Right now, there is a huge market for high-end town buses, figuring at around 500 units per year. This is already expected to grow about one-fifth. The new plant is expected to be producing 700 buses a year come 2011. The buses will be shuttling between Nigdi and Shivaji Nagar.

In India, if you’re riding a Mercedes-Benz bus, then consider yourself lucky. Most of the townsfolk can only afford to ride their bicycles around town. So high-end city buses are already considered to be a luxurious form of transportation. Mercedes-Benz India thus will be focusing on low-floor buses which are now currently in high demand all around the country. So if you happen to country hop to India, look out for Mercedes-Benz buses roaming the city. And treat yourself to a luxurious ride.

Three Mercedes-Benz Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid buses, with two more on their way at a later date, have been commissioned by Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG (SSB) after successfully passing practical service trials as far back as December of last year.

The Citaro earned a lot of good remarks from passengers that happened to stumble upon the three hybrids being tested for one whole week. Along the inner-city 42 route, the Citaro was able to demonstrate exceptional fuel economy, despite the infamous routes tricky topographic layout.
On hand to receive the buses was SSB board member Wolfgang Arnold, alongside him Stuttgart provincial capital Mayor Wolfgang Schuster, as well as Daimler AG board member Andreas Renschler who takes charge of both Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses.

With the hybrid buses, the city of Stuttgart is well on its way to having a more sustainable mode of urban transportation. The city is also the best proving ground for what the Citaro, as well as other hybrid vehicles, are capable of—whatever is proven successful here should do very well in other places as well.

With the Citaro on its way to being part of SSB’s fleet, decades of bus and coach strategy shall reach a new milestone of trial and implementation of new technology—hybrid technology, that is.

L Visalia Hi ResFULL 597x398 CNG buses a hit in Los Angeles, California

Orders keep coming for low emission trucks and buses at Daimler Trucks North America and Daimler Buses. Around 130 compressed natural gas (CNG) school buses were ordered from Thomas Built Buses—Daimler Truck North America’s school bus manufacturer—alone. That figure is actually the biggest ever purchase of CNG buses for Daimler. You might be wondering who purchased such a huge order. The answer to that is the Los Angeles Unified School District. The CNG buses should be all be delivered by the fourth quarter of this year.

It leaves little surprise that the transportation services division of LAUSD only entertains bidding for buses that run on alternative fuel sources. Right now, the district is California’s largest in terms of CNG bus operation, having as many as 300 CNG buses servicing the streets. So it’s no wonder that Thomas Built’s zero-emission CNG’s won bidding. Their buses comply with the U.S. EPA 2010 emission standards and are also compliant with California Air Resources Board limits.

Thomas Built Buses president and CEO Kelley Patt welcomes the chance to show people their commitment to the environment and passenger safety. Patt revealed that Daimler Buses North America not only supplied CNG buses but Orion-brand hybrids as well. Around 3,000 Orion hybrids have been ordered so far and around 25 have been delivered.
