Among the top lot in the auction was a remarkable 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Cabriolet A. It was also the first time a 540K was offered in a public auction, which resulted to a buildup of excitement of both room and online bidders. Formula 1 legend and five-time world champion Juan Manuel Fangio’s Mercedes W196 car fetched a total amount of £17.5 million in an auction at Goodwood Festival of Speed. According to BBC News, the amount may seem absurd for a car that is nearly 60 years old. Fangio actually used the Mercedes W196 to secure victory in two Grand Prix in 1954. These are the Swiss and German Grand Prix. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster Fetches $11.77M in Auction

While previously considered as a potentially record-setting vintage car, the rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster owned by Prussian baroness Gisela von Krieger and her family still managed to snag a pretty sum. The vehicle’s final number at the Pebble Beach auction was $11.77 million. Gooding & Co. expected the vehicle to shatter the world record for a vehicle’s auction price, with the same auctioneer setting that figure—a cool $16.4 million—with the sale of a 1957 Testarossa last year. Those expectations are based on the rarity of this vintage Mercedes-Benz model, not to mention the fact that this Special Roadster was owned only by a couple of von Krieger nobility…. 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster a Contender to Set Auction Record

A rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster is set to go up for grabs at an auction by Gooding & Company, and many believe this rare car has what it takes to break the auction record for vehicles when it goes up for bidding at Pebble Beach, right after the Concours d’Elegance show. Some say that the vehicle could easily fetch $10 million, but there are also some who think it can go high enough to exceed the current vehicle auction price record of $16.4 million, which achieved in 2011 for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa car that was used by the manufacturer’s team to compete at Le Mans…. 1955 Gullwing Sells For A Princely Amount

As this auction result shows, it’s not only Ferraris that have a lock on the staggering amounts that collector cars sell for nowadays. At a recently concluded Gooding and Company auction, a 1955 Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing garnered a $4,620,000 bid that made it the top seller for that auction. In comparison, a Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider changed hands at the same auction for $3,905,000. What made this Gullwing so expensive is the fact the it’s practically a museum piece in terms of condition. Being one of only 29 alloy-bodied 300 SLs was also a major factor in making the car so desirable. Aside from the rarity of… Continue Reading »
