Daimler-Aston Martin Talks On Maybach Future Halted

Talks on the proposed partnership between Maybach and Aston Martin have apparently been halted due to unreasonable demands from one of the parties. You may recall that Daimler and Aston Martin have been in talks for several months now to build the next range of models for the struggling Maybach brand. Aston Martin would have gotten access to several technologies from the German manufacturer, notably the M- and S-Class platforms plus the 4.6-liter biturbo V8. These would have provided a big boost to Aston Martin’s development of the Lagonda.

Instead, Daimler has announced the cessation of the talks because of Aston Martin’s demands for money. While this development is not the nail on the coffin of the Maybach brand, it does narrow the options for the ultra-luxury marque, which has not performed to par. The German carmaker has been making noises about the possibility of producing Maybachs inhouse, so that is obviously under more serious consideration.

Update on the Future of Maybach

It has been reported that Daimler will be announcing their decision on Maybach on July 1st, however it seems that it will be postponed until late July. Previously, reports said that  there are only two options, to axe the brand or to get a partnership with the British carmaker Aston Martin.

In an article from Automotive News, a third option emerges and according to three company sources the other option is to keep Maybach as a Mercedes-Benz brand, like AMG. While AMG is the sub-brand for sports and performance vehicles, Maybach would be used for the company’s top-of-the-line models for S, CL and GL class.

As of now, spokespersons of both Daimler and Aston Martin refuse to comment on Maybach’s future as a board meeting is still scheduled to happen.

Gary Paffett signed a new multi-year contract with Mercedes-Benz.The driver, who recorded a total of 17 wins from 73 starts, has been with Mercedes-Benz for 8 years.

He won the DTM championship, Britain’s first, in 2005 while he was at the wheel of AMG Mercedes C-Klasse. In 2007, he became the first driver to win the race using a one-year old car.

In a press statement, Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport said, “Gary is a vital part of our very successful history in the DTM. He is a racer in the purest form: straight and tough but always fair. On behalf of Mercedes-Benz, I would like to thank Gary for all his hard work and the success he has had until now. This new contract will take us into a second decade together, and we will work hard to ensure it will be just as successful as our first – or even better,”

Aston Martin merge possible

Isn’t it interesting to see companies merging together to form new products and services? It’s even more interesting when it’s car manufacturers which are trying to build partnerships hoping to come up with something viable and sustainable, without hurting either end. Such is the case between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin, who are planning to work together somewhere in the future.

According to a report by Autocar, speculations are roaming around that it was Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche who talked about the possible collaboration. Quoting Mr. Zetsche, “Smaller brands need help with new technology and it’s possible we could do things in the future.” No offense meant to Aston Martin, but despite the extravagance and niche attached to their luxury cars, their market is simply too limited, UK being their biggest. If a partnership does evolve, we might be able to see Mercedes-Benz engines going into Aston Martin cars, or even totally new models in the future.

There was even news back in 2008 about Mercedes-Benz planning on taking a few shots at Aston Martin shares, in the hopes of sharing their technology. Those dreams, however, never really materialized. Who knows? Those may come into realization this time around. If something, if anything, does work out, we’ll be sure to write about it. So stay tuned.
