Mercedes-Benz To Come Out With AMG Hybrids In The Near Future

AMGhybrid 597x396 Mercedes Benz To Come Out With AMG Hybrids In The Near Future

Audi has their E-tron concept cars and BMW their ActiveHybrid. Porsche introduced the Cayenne Hybrid last year and the 918 RSR this year. There can be no doubt now that the green revolution has reached the domain of sports and luxury cars. Once the domain of cars like the Toyota Prius, vehicles with electric propulsion and alternative fuel technologies are now mass-market commodities that are gaining wide acceptance. Even Porsche tuner Ruf has joined the bandwagon with their eRuf 911.

With Mercedes-Benz showing the neon-colored SLS AMG E-Cell at the North American International Automobile Show, the company has shown that it is seriously looking at this new technology and its application to sports cars in particular. Rumors are now going around that Mercedes in-house tuner AMG is looking to mate its sporty gasoline engines with a hybrid arrangement involving electric motors.

Herbert Kohler, future mobility and advanced engineering department head has stated that “AMG vehicles in the coming years will be available as hybrids. The AMG family will still be about performance, but – like every other automaker under the sun – fuel consumption is a constant part of engineering discussions going forward”.

With this kind of official statement, the future of high-performing sports hybrids is assured and that Mercedes-Benz will come out with the products that will suit the luxury market.

Pagani Outs New C9 / Huayra Teaser

It seems Italian sportscar manufacturer Pagani can’t resist the urge to torture their fans, after it released yet another teaser video that barely showed the fine curves of its upcoming C9 / Huayra car.

The teaser trailer is quite dark, with the occasional panning of a light source to reveal the curvaceous elements of the C9′s design and architecture. In the video, we see fine detail of the car’s bumper, its tail lights, and some body shots within just a few seconds. We are also treated to a bit of prolonged footage showing the steering wheel as well as the instrument panel of the C9. It’s a nice-looking retro-styled wheel—in fact, it’s so retro, it even seems futuristic in a way.

Powered by an AMG V12 engine, the C9 (also known by its revealed production name, “Huayra,” produces a massive amount of power: 700 horsepower plus 740 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s destined for an official unveiling come March at the Geneva Motor Show.

5.5 Liter Biturbo V8 Gets Naturally-Aspirated Variant

55V8 5.5 Liter Biturbo V8 Gets Naturally Aspirated VariantIn replacing the 6.2 liter that was AMG’s mainstay engine, the twin-turbo V8 being introduced by AMG in some models this year will be the backbone of the company’s top performance models, and it is certainly a big stick that packs a wallop in the form of 560 horsepower. However, this twin turbo development is not the only thing AMG has been working on and it has been reported that Mercedes-Benz’s performance division has been working on a naturally-aspirated variant of the 5.5-liter 32-valver.

The naturally aspirated powerplant will have an output in the region of 420 horsepower and will incorporate technologies like a cylinder cut-off system. By “killing” certain cylinders in low-load situations like cruising, fuel consumption and emissions are decreased.

Since not all AMG models will necessarily carry the biturbo 5.5-liter V8, this non-turbo variant is reportedly being groomed for use in the updated SLK55 and AMG C55. This would include the Black Series hardcore variants. However, the 4-door C63 will reportedly still be equipped with the previous 6.2 liter V8, which is not a bad thing at all.

SLS AMG E-Cell Set for 2013 Release

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed that its all-electric supercar, the SLS AMG E-Cell, is going to be ready at dealerships waiting to be purchased by wealthy, environment-friendly connoisseurs sometime in 2013. No details have been revealed about pricing and exact dates, but the confirmation that the SLS AMG will legitimately be sold at dealerships should be enough for now.

The 525 hp vehicle is powered by four rear-mounted electric motors, and it will require a mere 3.9 seconds to go from 0 to 62 mph. That’s quite a good figure considering the gasoline SLS AMG takes just a shade faster to accomplish the same feat.

A number of revisions were made to accommodate the electrice powertrain, such as a redesigned front suspension, and the vehicle is heavier than its standard counterpart by a good 800 lbs.

The SLS AMG E-Cell sports a citrus color scheme called “AMG lumilectric magno,” which is reminiscent of Day-Glo yellow. While it is certainly an acquired taste, the electric supercar is nonetheless attractive because of it. See you in 2013, then.

[Video] Pagani C9 “Huarya” Spied in Italy

Pagani has yet to officially take the wraps off its upcoming supercar, with the working name C9 and with the production name Huarya. However, videos are now circulating that shows this AMG-powered marvel strutting its stuff on the streets of Italy.

The Pagani C9 or Huarya runs on an AMG bi-turbo 6-liter V12 engine that will give the supercar a whopping 700 horsepower with around 740 lb.-ft. of torque. So far, the only official videos of the car have been some teasers that close up on some of the vehicle’s details. Now, with this new spy-shot video courtesy of a YouTube user known only as “marchettino,” we see the C9 in action as it enters a gap between parked vehicles and also a shot of it weaving its way through highway traffic. Good stuff.

Hopefully we’ll see more updates as the supercar’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March draws nearer.
