AMG 5.5-liter biturbo motor outperforms naturally-aspirated V8

2010 amg 5 5 litre v8 biturbo engine 01 resized2 597x333 AMG 5.5 liter biturbo motor outperforms naturally aspirated V8

Performance, fuel economy, less emissions—is it too much to ask for all three? Not quite, and Mercedes-Benz makes sure that their loyal customers get what they deserve. Their latest engine, the new AMG 5.5-liter biturbo engine, combines all three characteristics and puts them in one neat package. AMG’s new engine delivers up to 563 horsepower and 664 lb-ft torque.

With all that power comes with a host of cutting edge technologies to make it one of the most advanced engines in the world. It features direct gasoline injection, twin turbochargers, air-water intercooling, plus Mercedes-Benz patented Controlled Efficiency stop-start function. Excited? Well, you got to wait around until November this before you see it under the hood. Most likely, it’ll be a 2011 AMG CL that’s going to be flaunting this new engine.

The trend that Mercedes-Benz is following is definitely one that seeks to improve efficiency with smaller displacements. Case in point is the new 5,461 cc engine that 747 cc smaller than the AMG 6.3-liter V8. The thing is, even with a lower displacement, Mercedes-Benz was able to bump up output of the new engine to exceed that of its ancestor. Throw the AMG Performance Package into the mix and you get as much as the aforementioned performance figures. It’s torque curve will virtually blow away other engines in the same power class.

The new engine boasts a 27-percent improvement in fuel economy. Considering that it’s a biturbo motor that can outperform the naturally aspirated V8, it’s one hell of a wonder. This is definitely one of the strongest selling points of CL63 AMG.

The Domani Motors-Renntech SL65 AMG Black Series

02 renntech1 597x447 The Domani Motors Renntech SL65 AMG Black Series

Ready for a little bit of madness? Some time back, the guys down at Domani Motors were able to get their hands on an SL65 AMG Black Series, and put it in their showroom. However, they weren’t really intent on keeping the car in ‘stock’ form. They felt that the car was capable of even more awesomeness, and so that’s what they did. They perked up the car and made it even more other-worldly than it already is. They did this with the help of their pals down at Renntech, whose Performance Package 1 was just what the doctor ordered to make their dreams come true.

For those of you who are boggled out of your minds, it’s sort of PCP for the Silver Arrows. The teams worked together to remap the ECU, install a more open exhaust system plus a few other neat tricks to manage the impossible. The end result is around 805 horsepower and 1,000 pound per feet of torque. And what’s even more impressive is their brainchild is completely streetable, albeit with a few reminders to whoever is going to drive it. There’ll be cops on the loose, mind you.

If you do end up driving one, might we suggest that you take note of the 100-percent locking rear differential that the guys put into place. It takes all the power the engine can muster and throws it without any consideration to the rear wheels. Remember, this sort of hardware is almost similar to a spool, which is ILLEGAL in most states in the US, by the way. It’s the sort that race cars come equipped with to tear down corners on a race track. The car also comes with an upgraded tranny to comfortably handle the immense power of the engine. Excessive? Not quite. Fun? Undeniably.

Insider Cam: Top Gear puts Camaro and E63 AMG in blood fest

You know how the boys at Top Gear are. They’re despicably adventurous when it comes to road and track-testing cars. They’re also crazy enough to pit cars that are of totally different segments, just for the fun of it. To refresh your memory, these guys had paired a Ford Fiesta and a Chevrolet Corvette against one another, AND tried running a Jaguar XK120 alongside a Vincent Black Shadow plus a train.

Seriously. So if you take their results in confidence, then you’re probably as terminally crazy as they are. And if there’s anything this show is all about, it’s fun, fun and more fun with cars.

In their latest video, they put the Chevrolet Camaro up against a very unlikely foe—the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Granted, both cars have a similarly displaced 6.2-liter V8 engine, but engine specs can be deceiving on paper. Still, you have to admit it’s very entertaining to see The Stig hoon the Benz around Top Gear’s air strip test track in an attempt to par with the Camaro.

Oh, what the heck!? If you’re into vuvuzela, then you might enjoy watching this video with The Stig jabbing the German luxury car’s throttle. And if there’s anything in this video that’s worth watching, it’s seeing the Benz hooning around a track like it isn’t supposed to. Enjoy, people.

Limited edition C63 AMG DR 520 to treat the UK

37347761049cmb3321 597x398 Limited edition C63 AMG DR 520 to treat the UK

At 460 hp, there’s no denying that the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has bragging rights to boot. But why stop there? There’s always room for more, and it’s never too late to turn something good into something better. And that’s exactly the case with Mercedes-Benz Special Products Division’s latest project. Out of hiding from their plant sitting in Brooklands race track in England is the limited-production DR 520.

So what’s the deal behind the humdrum name? Well, it only refers to the new power rating of the engine, which is pegged at around 520 horsepower. Not so humdrum now, is it? Benz engineers were able to bump up its power by 60 horses, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from zero to sixty in just 4.1 seconds for the sedan, while adding a second more for the wagon. Special edition variants are available for both of them.

All variants will have the AMG Performance Pack—upgraded brakes, engine components—as standard. And the most interesting part is, they’re available in either white or black matte vinyl wrap finishes, complete with titanium-finish brightwork and a generous helping of specialized badges. The interior is totally up to you to find out. The end result is totally irresistible.

Better hurry, folks. Only 20 of these babies will come out, ONLY in the UK.

The KICHERER Mercedes-Benz SLS Supersport Edition Black

101 597x397 The KICHERER Mercedes Benz SLS Supersport Edition Black

Waiting with bated breathe for an SLS AMG Black Series? Well, how’s about a Kicherer version? The Mercedes-Benz tuner decided to go ahead and make one anyways. They’re calling it the KICHERER Mercedes-Benz SLS Supersport Edition Black. Pretty long name, isn’t it? Well, it won’t be a waste of saliva –it’s got some pretty neat modifications that are sure to make you think twice about keeping your SLS AMG dead stock.

First in the list of features is sports ‘spoiler skirt’ under the front bumper. We’re not entirely sure what the hell that is but it sure sounds nifty. And then there’s the awesome diffuser fins in the back to make sure you won’t launch like an airplane in top gear. Both of these are made from carbon fiber by the way. The sports ‘screw thread’—another mind-boggling modification—suspension system is quite marvelous, allowing the driver to fine tune the ride from inside the cockpit. And then there’s the stainless steel exhaust system—also adjustable from the inside—allowing the driver to go from low, mid to high flow depending on sound preference and performance needs.

The Supersport will be rolling on 3-piece 20-inch RS-1’s—which are very lightweight—and will be powered by a tweaked version of the SLS’ V8. Power is expected to be around 620hp—a 45-hp bump from stock form. And there’s even word of a ‘matte black foliation’ that’s supposed to help preserve the SLS’ factory paint. You could only guess how that’s going to turn out. Think along the lines of Michael Keaton’s Batmobile—a smaller version of it, without the afterburner.

From this point onwards, we’ll just let the pictures speak for themselves. Check them out.

TC-Concept EXESOR kit for SL65 AMG Black Series

mercedes sl65 amg gets black series treatment from tc concepts 21385 1 597x448 TC Concept EXESOR kit for SL65 AMG Black Series

How many of you are fans of convertibles? Hands up. Your sheer numbers just goes to show that not everyone prefers a coupe, and that’s why Mercedes-Benz makes sure you’re never left out. That’s what the Cabriolet is for. It’s not just for the ladies, but for gentlemen as well—at least those who appreciate having the wind blow through their beard and chest hair. And just to make sure you don’t grow envious of Brabus owners, TC-Concepts has come up with their very own pimped out version of your favorite Cabrio.

The Mercedes-Benz tuner now offers a modification kit for the SL65 AMG Black Series, giving the coupe-slash-cabrio bigger balls of steel and a lot of attitude. Going by the name of EXESOR, the modification kit puts a 6.5-liter twin-turbo V12 monster of an engine into your SL65 AMG Black Series, plus a reprogrammed ECU and redesigned boost control. On the rear end of this behemoth is a new sports exhaust system that features a low backpressure catback system, while a modified sports air filter sits up front.

The stock AMG adjustable sports suspension will be modified with a lowering module, bringing down the action to as close as 60nm to the asphalt. The 20-inch TC Ultraspoke 3-piece rims with Dunlop tires—285/25 R20 upfront and 325/25 R20 on the rear—speak for themselves.

As for the body, we’ll just say there’ll be a lot of carbon-reinforced plastic and genuine carbon. Aesthetics are all there in the picture. What’s inside is for you to find out. So head on down to TC-Concept.

Insider Spy: The CL63 and CL65 AMG

02 2011 cl 597x306 Insider Spy: The CL63 and CL65 AMG

Everyone wants to have a peak at the future, whether it be of their lives or their favorite premium car manufacturer. We can’t give you predictions of your future, but we sure can offer you a heads up of future car models being concocted in the brewing pot. And here’s the latest—leaked images of what seems to be the CL63 and CL65 AMG—courtesy of 4WheelNews.

Mind you, these two models are still a long way from being put in a press release, so they’re real hot as of this post. From the looks of it, they’re going to be treated to brand new Silver Arrow front fascias that are nearly totally upright, new headlight design and aggressive fenders. Above the fascia is a redesigned hood to complement a totally angst-ridden lower fascia with LED daytime running lights.

The overall design is sharp enough to cut your senses, and rather mixes well with the existing CL-Class lineup. Since all we’re working with are leaked photos, we’re not entirely sure what lies under their hoods. We’ll just have to wait and see. But judging from the existing AMG powertrains, it’s a huge possibility that this duo will be powered by the 5.5-liter V8 engine that’s currently sitting inside the CL-Class S63 AMG’s engine bay. Well, only time will tell.

The rear, meanwhile, also contributes appropriately to the new look: the performance SUV now features darkened tail lamps incorporating a clear-lens design and LED technology. The subtle changes to the exterior coordinate perfectly with the high-gloss, chromed front and rear underguard, and afford the ML 63 AMG an even more powerful and distinctive appearance.

AMG Driving Academy teams up with Gran Turismo 5

gran turismo 5 ties w 597x398 AMG Driving Academy teams up with Gran Turismo 5

Think you’ve got what it takes to pilot a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG? Well, MB and the team behind Gran Turismo 5 want to be sure, and they’re working together for a project that will make you aware of what it’s like to be behind the wheel of the SLS on sleds. Yep, you heard that right – sleds.

Call it crazy but they’re doing it. If you’re crazy enough (about the SLS AMG), you’ll take on one of three (or all three) courses offered at the Mercedes Benz AMG Driving Academy. Courtesy of the GT5 team, enrollees will be able to try the SLS AMG on their demo game on sleds. The simulator will give you a feel of the SLS AMG’s handling characteristics so you won’t get shocked once you step into the real thing.

Mercedes-Benz USA Product Manager Greg Clark confirmed that the SLS AMG sled simulator will be using both tracks that currently host the AMG driving academy – Road Atlanta and Laguna Seca. If you’re in the know, you’ll realize that the Seca is no joke. There’ve been a lot of casualties thanks to that track’s crazy sudden uphill-downhill hairpin corners. It’s crazy. But hey, that’s the real reason why you’d want to enroll, isn’t it? To get downright crazy with the SLS AMG on an equally crazy race track.

So buckle up and strap on those Nomex gloves. The AMG Driving Academy is just around the corner. Bring tons of cash for your tuition.

Neighborly love: The Brabus Stealth SL65 AMG Black Series

brabus sl65 black se 1 800x0w1 597x399 Neighborly love: The Brabus Stealth SL65 AMG Black Series

You just can’t get enough of Brabus, can you? Well, it’s all good. Brabus can’t get enough of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 either. Apparently, they couldn’t quite get over their creation of the 800hp Vanish SL65 AMG Black Series that they upped the bravado even more. Dubbed as the Stealth, it’s even more sinister and packs more teeth than the Vanish, making us envy those private Dubai customers even more.

Say, you have an SL65 AMG Black Series in its most basic form. It already has around 670hp, enough to make short work of almost anything that dares cross its path. Now, imagine adding a little bit more power to its engine. Let’s say, around 150hp more. So that’s a total of 820 skull crushing horses to shred the rear tires. Considering that Brabus’ customers have seemingly infinite dollar accounts, we’re sure they can buy all the rubber that they’ll need to keep their toys rolling. But they’ll need to spend on another luxury – speeding tickets.

You might be interested to know that the two ultra-lavish customers of the Vanish and the Stealth are neighbors. It’s really no surprise, isn’t it. Birds of the same value flock together? They’re like, “Hey, I like your toy. Where’d you get it?” and the Vanish owner says, “Oh, some toymaker named Brabus,“, and the other goes, “Can I have mine named Stealth?” Gnarly.
