The most significant of these changes is the appearance of the 4Matic all-wheel drive system coupled to AMG’s 7-speed Speedshift transmission. Thanks to the unending parade of spyshots, Mercedes enthusiasts know that the current E-Class is getting a facelift. And as facelifts go, not much is expected by way of drivetrain improvements. Usually, one sees a modest bump in output, or some extra fuel efficiency in terms of mileage. Mercedes-Benz is slated to debut the all-new 2012 S350 BlueTec 4MATIC at the upcoming 2011 Detroit Auto Show, giving joy to American diesel fans for the new year. The vehicle, touted as an entry-level model for Merc’s S-Class, sports the BlueTec V6 turbo power plant coupled with 4MATIC all-wheel drive functionality. The BlueTec can not only satiate power requirements by fans, but also offers a greener alternative compared to most diesels. The first time a Mercedes-Benz Viano was entered in a rally competition, the MPV took first place in the SUV category. Seated at the wheel of the vehicle (for the most part a production model) in this 19th Rally des Gazelles were Irishwoman Jeanette James and FrenchÂwoman Anne-Marie Ortola. The two also won the special prize for first-time competitors in their class. The world’s only women’s rally went through the Moroccan desert, as in previous years. The only difference between the desert Viano and its series counterpart was a roll-over cage, racing-style bucket seats and the six-point seat belts.
