Classic E-Class diesel wagon going sideways

How often do you see a classic Mercedes-Benz wagon drifting on the track? Let’s see… uhm, never? Well, now you will. Here’s a video of an E-Class wagon, a diesel, going sideways in what seems to be a drifting competition. In case it hasn’t sinked in yet, what you’ll be witnessing is a real live Mercedes-Benz E-Class wagon. A diesel. Well, at least it used to be a diesel.

From the looks of the wheels and tires, and of course the fact that it’s competing in a highly competitive sport, this wagon has been modified inside out. If the Ghostbusters were still around, we reckon they’ll be trading in their Eco-1 for this baby. Hell, they’ll probably even throw in Slimer in their excitement. But of course, it takes a lot more than ghostbusting skills to properly let loose on a racetrack, much more sideways.

Ever since the Drift King himself, Keiichi Tsuchiya, started drifting on the mountain passes of Japan, never did anyone think that a European diesel wagon would one day be doing the very same thing on a race track. Drifting really has changed ever since Tsuchiya brought it from the underground to a full-blown motor sport.

Well, enough talk. Enjoy the video people. And one more thing. Don’t try this at home. Not even on the streets.

A ride on the Pagani Zonda R

What is it about the Pagani Zonda R that makes it so special? Is it the Mercedes-Benz sourced engine? Or is it the sound that over 700 horsepower makes with its engine’s 12 cylinders? Well, both are quite accurate answers for most of the people who have driven it, but there’s one thing about the Zonda R that really stands out—and it’s written on its doors—”6:47 Nurburgring”.

Yes, people. The Pagani Zonda R lapped the Green Hell in less than 7 minutes, enough speed to beat the Ferrari 599XX around the infamous ‘Ring. The time of 6 minutes and 47 not only beats the 599XX but literally every other car, both production and track-only, that dared to set foot on the ‘Ring. So yes, the Pagani Zonda R is a really fast car. And it has agility to boot. How else do you think it was able to lap the ‘Ring in such short time? There’s only so much that human ability can do. And it takes a lot of ability to harness the limit of a machine’s potential.

Well, enough talk. We’re privileged enough to have this video of the boys down at Autocar taking a test drive around an airfield on the Zonda R. It’s not really the smoothest kind of driving you’ll see, but that’s beside the point. The Pagani Zonda R is way up there with the rest of its supercar competitors. Enjoy the video.

World’s Fastest 3D Road Car Movie Trailer and The Making

Are you fond of watching 3D films? But, perhaps a better question is, have you ever watched a 3D film, or much less know what it is? Simply put, it’s a film that requires you to wear 3D glasses in order to have a live experience. It’s like having the characters, objects and background come alive right before your eyes—that’s what a 3D movie is. And Mercedes-Benz set out on the Isle of Man to create the fastest-ever road car movie in 3D. What we have for you here is both the 2D version of the movie, plus behind-the-scenes footage of the stars and the crew making it.

What you’re about to see is David Coulthard pushing his SLS AMG to the limits that the Isle of Man mountain road allows. It may look simple to you at first, but if you really think about it, it’s DC that has the hardest job of all—and that is to keep himself from overtaking the SLS AMG in front of him. Yes, there’s another SLS AMG and it’s being driven by DC’s friend, fellow Scot and champion rally driver Robby Head. Robby’s job is to drive as fast as he could to give DC as much space to work with as possible.

Well, enough talk. It’s time you see it for yourself. In 2D, that is.

Fifth Gear and David Coulthard play with the SLS AMG on the Isle of Man

How fast would you drive an SLS AMG? 120 miles per hour? Well, it’s not enough to beat David Coulthard’s run on the Isle of Man on his very own (spare) SLS. He was invited by Mercedes-Benz to drive the SLS while shooting a scene for a certain 3D film. What film that is doesn’t really matter right now. What does matter is we’ve got video of an interview with DC on the Isle of Man, as well as a challenge run by Fifth Gear main man Tiff Needell to meet, if not surpass, DC’s 160 miles per hour maximum speed estimate.

Why is this exciting for Needell? Well, it’s only the country’s sole stretch of public road that doesn’t have a speed limit—you can more or less strike a guess of what roads they have there—AND, it’s been closed to the public. Which means, DC and Needell had every inch of road to themselves.

As for whether Needell was able to attain his goal, we’ll leave you to see it for yourselves in the video. What we can tell you is that according to both DC and Needell, the SLS truly comes alive when nearing the limit of its performance—which is around 200 miles per hour. That should serve as a good clue. Enjoy the video!

David Coulthard takes the SLS AMG E-Cell for a ride

The thing is about electric cars is that not too many people appreciate them. Not unless you drive one will your  really be able to understand the real potential of a car powered by batteries. Former Formula One driver and now DTM racer David Coulthard had the opportunity to test drive a not-so-ordinary electric car and had several things to say about it, most importantly about its potential. The electric vehicle in question here is none other than the SLS AMG E-Cell, the electric version of Mercedes-Benz’s V8 super car.

In the video, you’ll see David being astounded by the E-Cell’s immense torque. There is no delay whatsoever upon flooring the throttle unlike what you’d normally expect from even the V8 in the SLS AMG. And since the E-Cell only has a single gear, it’s like accelerating from zero to 100 km/h with no resistance whatsoever. Since each wheel of the E-Cell is independently run by an individual electric motor, the torque potential for each wheel is unbelievable. Combine zero response time to throttle input and the handling characteristics of an all-wheel drive and you get one of the meanest cornering machines ever made.

Of course, there’s always caveats to great things, and for the E-Cell, it’s the limited top speed and battery life. Consider it an expense you have to suffer for being environmentally friendly and having torque on demand in virtually any cornering situation. Fair price to pay, wouldn’t you say?

Silent glider: The SLS AMG E-Cell prototype in action

Here’s a real treat for you guys. We already gave you a peek at a prototype of the SLS AMG E-Cell. Now, here’s a video that shows it doing what it does best—driving ever so gracefully—courtesy of German magazine Bild who were able to get their hands on the all-electric super car. No, folks—Bild doesn’t translate as ‘envy’ in the English language—although that’s a natural reaction especially if you’re dying and drooling to get down and dirty with Mercedes-Benz’s supercar, much more an electric version of it.

Anyway, it’s an advantage if you’re fluent in German, because the video is riddled with comments in the SLS AMG’s native language. If all you’re armed with is English, then it might help to just listen to the emotions of the driver storytelling his driving impressions. There is a bonus in the video, though. It gives you a peek under the E-Cell’s hood. One look will whet the appetite of gadget geeks out there. Imagine an electronic motor that’s capable of replacing the SLS AMG’s standard 6.2-liter V8 engine. There are plenty of high-voltage wires in the view, which gives you roughly an idea of the power those wires have to handle.

The E-Cell’s interior looks good as well, having a redesigned instrument cluster. As with all high-end electronic devices, the E-Cell’s battery levels and power migration can be viewed along with the navigation system on the display console.

Oh well, you might want to wear sunglasses before viewing the video. The AMG Lumilectric Mango finish may give your eyes a tinge of sweetness and pain rolled into one exhilarating sensation.

Susan Stoddart takes the E63 Estate for a dance

e63 amg estate susie 597x333 Susan Stoddart takes the E63 Estate for a dance

It’s not everyday that you see a full-sized family wagon being hooned–especially on a racetrack. In fact, you could say it’s an impossibility. It’s even less probable that you see one being pushed to its limits not by a male driver, but by a professional female racr. So therein lies the difference between Mercedes-Benz and other premium car manufacturers. They dare put their name and reputation at stake by doing the impossible.

In this video, you’ll find out exactly what we’re talking about. It’s none other than pro-racing femme fatale Susie Stoddart behind the wheel of the latest E-Class Es63 Estate. And yes, those squeals you hear are the tires of the Estate screaming. Stoddart does it so gracefully that it almost looks so easy—when, in fact, it takes a lot of driver sensitivity, skills and balls of steel to pull it off. But we’re quite sure all Stoddart was thinking about the entire time is which restaurant to go to for dinner.

Kids, ladies, don’t try this at home. Neither should you attempt this on the streets. Don’t be a douche. If you’re going to be hooning anywhere, it better be a racetrack. And at least make sure your car is as reliable as a Mercedes-Benz. Otherwise, you’ll just be pre-empting huge repair costs to your vehicle—not to mention reason to buy new tires.

Piech Ripper: Mercedes-Benz throws Response Volley at Volkswagen

To those ignorant about the recent developments in the automotive industry, the video associated with this post may seem very funny. To them it’s just a new funny commercial mocking the Grim Reaper’s failed attempt to snatch the life of a Mercedes-Benz E-Class driver. However, for true automotive buffs, the video represents the start of a new ad rivalry between, or should we say full blown attack, between the two German heavyweights, namely, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz.

Let’s get specific now, shall we. Mercedes-Benz posted a new commercial on May 27, in which the man playing the role of ‘Grim Ripper’ has an uncanny resemblance to Mr. Ferdinand Piech. The iconic man is the current chairman of Volkswagen AG’s supervisory board and was awarded ‘Car Executive of the Century’ award in 1999.

In the commercial, the man (read Ferdinand Piech) is holding a scythe (which by the way is the trademark grim ripper tool) and tries to crash the driver of a new Mercedes Benz E-Class right into a blockade of logs, cranes and debris.

An official comment from Mercedes-Benz goes as, “In traffic precarious situations can come unexpectedly: before you know it there is an uninvited passenger. But with the brake assistant BAS + in the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class you can even trick the reaper.”

Well, the back-story behind Mercedes-Benz and Ferdinand Piech began when the later commented that Volkswagen AG is preparing to take Mercedes-Benz head on, sometime in the near future. The commercial, therefore, seems to be the first response from Mercedes-Benz’s side.

By throwing the commercial volley at Volkswagen, they want to tell Volkswagen that they’re not afraid of them; even if the latter suddenly appears on their front passenger seat with a scythe in hand.

“Robots” Used to Conduct Mercedes-Benz Safety Tests

Mercedes-Benz have applied automated driving to conduct safety tests. Their main objective was test their car’s safety as if a human is driving it. Parameters like speed, angle and timing cannot be simulated and it is not really safe to risk a human driver during tests. Mercedes-Benz is the leading manufacturer with regards to technological developments of cars. It is known to assist in fast tracking the progress and execution of airbags, three point safety belts, ABS, ESP and other automotive developments. Thus, automated driving systems have been improved for test driving purposes. Even though the said system has been used for some time now, they have presently developed a program that would tackle additional driving factors such as blind spot recognition systems, lane change warnings and night view assistance.

Autopilot systems that are used to drive cars are vehicles equipped with robots for steering, acceleration and braking. The commands are connected to the anon-board computer and the system follows a set of course for testing. According to the Head of Product Innovations & Process Technologies at Corporate Research and Advanced Engineering Daimler AG, Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian, using the future driver assistance system will solve more intricate traffic situations and lessen dangers of common accident-prone areas such as intersections.  He also added that their new automated driving test methods help them conform with their high quality safety demands much efficiently.

Mercedes is also conducting what they call “extreme tests” where they push the cars safety to the limit to be able to set some safety measures. If there is a vehicle mishap, the computers will instantly detect the errors and either stop it or simple record the problem. According to Mercedes management, human reaction is not as quick as a computer and it cannot perform repetitive tasks accurately.
