maybach backs photographer david lachapelle 23875 1 597x318 Maybach on full support for star photographer David LaChapelleThings couldn’t get any better for star photographer David LaChapelle, as he has got the backing of German luxury car manufacturer Maybach in his mentorship of another talented photographer, Garret Suhrie, whose international career is now taking off. Suhrie’s job as LaChapelle’s apprentice? To re-interpret the “Exposure of Luxury”, one of LaChapelle’s famous pieces.

The project is also part of LaChapelle’s partnership with Maybach, which started in 2009 and bore fruit in the form of the “Exposure to Luxury” and “Berlin Stories”, works the artist created to showcase Mayback’s luxury saloons.

LaChapelle’s task as Suhrie’s mentor is to expose him to the daily grind of working with Maybach, helping him create a network of acquaintances in the art industry through LaChapelle’s own circle as well as the Maybach Foundation. LaChapelle will be Suhrie’s mentor until August of next year, after which hopefully the artist will continue his role as Maybach’s artistic ambassador.

Suhrie was unanimously chosen as LaChapelle’s protege because of his immense talent. Having recognized this, the Wilhelm & Karl Maybach Foundation has vowed to support the mentorship to help ensure the project’s success. The Foundation has taken up the role of project manager and will be working with LaChapelle in implementing the content and schedule of this year’s mentoring calendar.

Maybach to launch Limited Edition 57S Coupe

So, you thought Maybach would just quietly recess into the past. Well, you are not alone who thinks this way. With their current sales chart figures, everyone in the auto industry is predicting the demise of the ultra luxury brand.

However, chaps at the design department of Maybach have something altogether different in their mind. Without giving any due consideration to the current financial crisis, Mayabch (Mercedes’exclusive brand) is going up and running on a new project called the ‘Maybach 57s coupe’.

maybach coupe
The whole idea started when a Weinsberg based custom coachbuilder, Xenatec, asked Daimler’s to build a build a coupe based on the Maybach 57s sedan. Diamler has agreed to the coachbuilder’s demand and the model is approved for a limited edition production run.

The coupe will compete head on with the Bentley Brooklands and the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe, both of which have substantial market share when it comes to stratospheric coupes.

The coupe will sport the same length of 5,730 mm as the 57S sedan but will have more width (2,180 mm) and will be lower (1,480 mm). Under the engine bay of the imposing two-door there will be the ’standard’ (read monstrous)twin-turbo 6.0 liter V12 borrowed from the 57S. So, the power figure stands at 612hp coupled with an earth shattering torque of 737 lb-ft. The handling of the vehicle will be enhanced to justify the sporty tag. Also, it will offer wider tracks, feature an improved suspension and 20 inch wheels.

As expected the design language of the vehicle, especially front, will be inspired by the new Maybach face displayed at this year’s Beijing Motor Show. In the coupe, the B-pillar has been pushed back by 20 cm and the front doors have been elongated. The rear of the coupe will sport an all new bumper, a custom exhaust and new lighting. A two-tone color scheme will also be offered in the car. As always the interior of the Maybach coupe will have a high degree of customization and offer myriad personalization options including sport seats for the very first time.

The pricing of the Maybach coupe will start from EUR 650,000 (or $816,500) and only 100 units will be commissioned. The company plans to introduce the vehicle in almost all the markets like the US, Asia, Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

Maybach Sale Not True, Says Daimler

maybach zeppelin mercedes 540x309 Maybach Sale Not True, Says Daimler
Recent rumors that Maybach has been put on the auction block and Chinese car company BYD may be the lucky buyer are not true, says Daimler. In an interview with Reuters, a Daimler spokesperson belied the sale talks, asserting that Maybach, despite having sold only 200 cars last year, is still crucial to Daimler’s branding.

The rumors may have been due to three reasons. One, Daimler and Chinese BYD has a joint venture in the electric cars market in China. Second, the Maybach brand of cars has grown stale. Spy photos leaked recently to avid car industry watchers however show minor upgrades scheduled for several Maybach lines. Lastly, and more importantly, Maybach couldn’t seem to parallel its Rolls-Royce and Bentley competitions in terms of sales. Rolls Royce is already doubling its production outputs to keep up with demand and Bentley is pushing forward with its plans of greening its Continental cars by 2012.

Industry watchers, however, are saying that the rumored Maybach sale may still come around eventually, if its dismal performance in the market continued.

Maybach to get a facelift before it retires?!?

maybach facelift
Reports coming from Mercedes Benz insiders in the UK claim that the Maybach division of luxury sedans is set for retirement soon. But before the line is discontinued, the Maybach 62, 57, and Landaulet models will get minor improvements, mostly focused on its front grilles and a change to LED lights. The image above is one of a few photo that were leaked on to the internet showing the facelift. The updates will be seen in the upcoming Beijing Motor Show in April this year.

Because of the current recession and the challenging economy worldwide since its rebirth in 2002, Maybach sales have continued to dive. Also, the subsidiary is being phased out in favor of Mercedes Benz’s expansion plans for the S-Class series, which is seen to target Maybach’s more upscale market. Mercedes Benz says the S-Class will debut in 2014, with corresponding improvements in the R-Class as well.

The Maybach automobile brand is accelerating its commitment to contemporary art. The focus is to work with internationally renowned artists like David LaChapelle and major institutions within the art community, like the Fondation Beyeler in Basel, Switzerland.

The latest highlight of Maybach’s artistic commitment is its collaboration with David LaChapelle, one of the world’s most prominent photographers. His artistic portrayals of Maybach luxury cars entitled „Exposure of Luxury” and „Berlin Stories” will celebrate their world premiere during Art Basel Miami Beach, where they will be first presented to Maybach guests and the press at an exclusive preview on December 5th, 2009. This artistic work focuses on the Maybach Zeppelin limited special edition and its historic predecessor from the 1930s, the Maybach Zeppelin DS 8. “After visiting the Maybach facility in Sindelfingen, I was inspired to create two iconic photographs which radiated the same seducing and dynamic appeal, as the Maybach itself,” said David LaChapelle. *WARNING, some pictures are not safe for work [NSFW]
