I-Spy: Computer-aided rendition of the future ML-Class

ML Class preview I Spy: Computer aided rendition of the future ML Class

Moving forward doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to drop all your past achievements and start from scratch. Sometimes, you’ve got to take pieces of past, successful projects and use them to build new creations. That’s what Mercedes-Benz is set to do with the next generation of the ML-Class. This time, the company is looking into putting in elements from their up-and-coming GL-Class and future R-Class models, plus advancements in powertrain systems to please future power and emission requirements.

By mid-2011, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML-Class SUV shall still be shrouded in mystery. There are, however, several spy shots of an advance prototype that shows a leaner form, albeit having the same wheelbase. Shots of its interior are included as well, accompanied by a computer-generated rendition of what it’s preferably going to look like.

There are some suggestions that the drivetrain may turn out to be a hybrid—both diesel and electric—although there are rumors that a gasoline-electric hybrid—as suggested by the divulged ML450 Hybrid—may be possible as well. A purely electric version of the ML Hybrid is even more possible, with what looks to be an 80-horsepower electric motor coupled with a direct-injected twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6. Battery power is speculated to be around 18-mile duration on full electric power alone.

Aussies have less to expect from new M-Class

30 2012 Mercedes Benz M Class 2 597x307 Aussies have less to expect from new M Class

A new M-Class is in the works. To be named the ML, Mercedes-Benz’s new SUV will be leaner and meaner, and will be more fuel efficient than the current M-Class. It’s also going to be a little bit shorter than the current vehicle, so weight is definitely going to be a big difference.

Of course, with less weight comes more power. And with new V6 and V8 engines, that’s a LOT of power – around 200 to 225kW and 350 to 370Nm for the 3.5-liter V6, and up to 320kW of power for the V8. Fuel consumption is predicted to be around 7.6L/100km and 9.5L/100km respectively for the V6 and the V8.

Reports say that the new M-Class will be launched around the first half of next year, but won’t reach Australian shores till three to six months later. Aussies also have less to expect since the V8 might not reach Down Under. Part of the reason is Australia’s fuel.

Mercedes-Benz’s new V6 and V8 engines are made to be Euro 5 compliant, which means at the end of their first 100,000km, they have to be clean as a whistle. With Australia’s fuel containing up to 50ppm of sulphur (10ppm limit for Euro 5), that brings compliance down to around Euro 4.5.

Man killed and an M-Class prototype wrecked in Autobahn crash

13943027502043314181 Man killed and an M Class prototype wrecked in Autobahn crash

No matter how careful you or other motorists are, unfortunate circumstances can and will happen.

A fatality recently occurred on the Autobahn, a long stretch of highway in Germany where speed limits are almost non-existent. The parties involved included a test driver for Daimler AG, a 26-year man, and a couple of good Samaritans that were trying to help.

Police reports that there was an earlier accident wherein the 26-year-old man drove into the median guard rail. A couple of motorists saw the crash and decided to stop and offer some assistance.

All this was happening in the wee hours of April 23, along the A81 stretch between Singen and Stuttgart. Without any speed limit and street lights to uncover the darkness, disaster was inevitable.

As the 26-year-old man was alighting from his car, the Daimler AG test driver, in his prototype 2012 M-Class SUV, going full speed unknowingly rammed into him and flipped over, landing on its roof and sliding some 250 feet. The two Samaritans were fortunate enough to hurdle over the guard rail, but the 26-year-old man wasn’t.

The test driver was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries, while the two Samaritans managed to dodge harm.
