SLS AMG coming to China this month

PHO 10Apr26 2200421 597x397 SLS AMG coming to China this month

September is a very special month for China, as Mercedes-Benz is set to start shipping the SLS AMG into Shanghai. This comes as a direct result of the company’s vastly improving market in China, and is a move to expand their product line up in the country.

The Chinese are by no means hard to please when it comes to cars, but for the handful who can afford to buy, and drive, an SLS AMG, it’ll take a lot of getting used to. The SLS AMG isn’t built for a comfy, luxurios ride. Far from it. This premium supercar was built to hit speeds nearing 200 miles per hour. It’s fast and agile, owing to its aluminum spaceframe body and the AMG 6.3-liter V8 that’s hiding underneath the hood.

The engine is capable of 420 kW (571 hp) and 650 Nm torque. Paired with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission that will outshift any human being, the engine’s power will chew up tires in no time. Fortunately, the SLS AMG rides on a sports tuned suspension system with equally lightweight aluminum double wishbones.

The car-loving Chinese elite will definitely love this car’s power. They’ve got enough road to let loose the SLS AMG for some serious adrenaline-pumping action.

China orders 100,000 electric vehicles

china orders 100000 electric benzes 23524 1 597x397 China orders 100,000 electric vehicles

China’s government is pretty much pleased with the partnership between Daimler and Chinese battery company BYD, so much so that they’ve placed orders for 100,000 electric vehicles. If you’re still wondering how that could be a big deal, just think of it this way—this is the largest contract for electric vehicles ever made.

It’s either the Chinese are so fond of driving around using batteries or they’re just avid fans of local products. But mind you, the electric vehicles in question are by no means cheap nor flimsy. By all means, Daimler has invested a lot to make the partnership work, despite being in partnership with Renault SA and Nissan. If you could recall, the Nissan Leaf is one of the few electric vehicles that are being pitted against the Chevrolet Volt.

While delivery deadlines have already been set, there are very little details of the deal available. Although you can expect B-Class design cues to be featured. While it doesn’t have the performance of a Mustang, still it can go a long, long way on a single charged battery pack—around 300 km.

Right now, the partnership between Daimler and BYD is as strong as ever, with both companies willing to come up with $87.8 million for their joint projects. So EV’s are there to stay in China as long as these two are around and working together.

Demand for German premium exceeding supply in China

china mb e class assembly getty 630 597x392 Demand for German premium exceeding supply in China

German premium car manufacturers are really raking in the money. Mercedes-Benz’s 2nd quarter production went past 300,000 vehicles boosting parent-company Daimler’s profits up to 2.1 billion euros (US$2.1 billion). BMW’s 2010 global sales forecast has risen to 1.4 million vehicles, as evident by the three to four months’ wait for a new 5 Series. Audi in fact increased its sales in 2010 with a percentage greater than both Mercedes-Benz’ and BMW’s figures. The big three of Germany have much to thank for from growing demand in the markets of US and China.

Sales recovery in the US is very apparent, but is even more overwhelming in China. Right now, Germany’s Big Three are working overtime to fill in the demands from the millions of China’s millionaires. Yep, you heard right—there are millions of them who don’t have anything better to do with their money except using it to make even more money—which is very wise, and typical, of the Chinese by the way. However, demand is still outnumbering supply. That’s why the three companies have increased their labor and production this summer to keep up.

An analyst even comments that even if China’s economic growth slows down, Germany’s big three will still be unable to meet order volume. That’s a very good thing, from a car manufacturer’s perspective. Although some economists are worried that it fuels further speculation of a double-dip recession occurring.

With the 13 percent increase in sales all over the globe, the company surpassed even their own expectations. The record-breaking performance in June is largely credited to the immense progress Mercedes-Benz is having in China. As many as 13,700 vehicles were sold, registering a 177-percent increase from last year’s 4,900 units.

Star Fund to help educate thousands of children in China

0013729e4a9d0c0e98a326 Star Fund to help educate thousands of children in China

Today marks the beginning of a new charity drive between Mercedes-Benz and the China Youth Development Foundation, or CYDF. Under the name of Mercedes-Benz Star Fund, the account has an initial amount of RMB 30 million and has began furnishing 125 music classrooms all across Hope Schools in China to give around 40,000 rural children proper music education.

The fund runs with the slogan “Nurturing the World of Tomorrow,” and serves as a basis for Mercedes-Benz’s five core CSR pillars, namely environmental protection, arts and music, sports, driving culture and other causes such as disaster aid projects. This new drive is proof that the company does not only sell cars—they’re very much involved in customer relations as much as setting a sustainable cause model.

Daimler Northeast Asia Chairman and CEO Ulrich Walker agrees that the fund does not only represent the company’s CSR efforts, but as well as their huge interest in the Chinese market right now which makes up quite a big chunk of the Earth’s population. Various international entities such as UNESCO, NCPA and CTA have all recognized the emergence of the Mercedes-Benz Star Fund. With their latest charity drive, it’s safe to say that Mercedes-Benz will keep doing business in China for years to come.

Daimler AG inks contract with China’s BYD

byd wang chuanfu Daimler AG inks contract with Chinas BYD

It’s now written in ink. Daimler AG has just signed a deal with China’s BYD Company Limited. They’re off to build a new brand of electric vehicles for the Chinese market. To be shared equally between the two parties, the new company will be christened the ‘Shenzen BYD Daimler New Technology Co. Ltd.’

That was excruciatingly long, don’t you think? Well, that’s typical for China whose government is very strict on multinational companies planting roots on their soil. Just as well, the two companies will be shelling out at least RMB 600 million as registered capital.

They’re going to be building a new line of electric vehicles that will benefit from both Daimler AG’s expertise in electric vehicle architecture and BYD’s firm grasp on battery technology and e-drive systems.

Both sides couldn’t hold back their anticipation for the team up. BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu acknowledges that his company is going to work very hard with Daimler AG into fully capitalizing on all opportunities. They want the new electric vehicles to enter the market as soon as possible. Daimler AG’s Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Dieter Zetsche believes this partnership is positioned perfectly and is well on its way into tapping the untold potential of electric vehicles in China.

Premium car segment players enjoying huge growths in China

mercedes benz glk china auto show0081 597x457 Premium car segment players enjoying huge growths in China

The sales war rages on between Europe’s three top luxury car makers on Chinese soil, starting off with Mercedes-Benz.

Daimler AG’s luxury car unit sold an astonishing 11,300 vehicles, a 100 percent increase compared to the previous year.

In second place is BMW with a reported group sales total of 12,440 vehicles for April. Compared to their sales the same month in 2009, last month’s figure registers a 115 percent increase for BMW AG three brands, namely BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce.

However, in every competition there has to be a winner, and Volkswagen AG’s luxury car unit takes the trophy selling the most vehicles in China. For the month of April, Audi sold 19,606 vehicles, registering a 61 percent increase compared to their sales figure the previous year. Counting from the month of January this year, Audi was able to sell as many as 71,000 vehicles, marking a 73 percent growth from 2009.

Comparing Audi’s figures to those of Mercedes-Benz, Daimler AG has a lot of work to do to catch up since their January-to-April figures only add up to a little more than half of Audi’s at 35,400 vehicles.

Still, it’s a very good year for Mercedes-Benz. And it just seems to be getting better and better.

Want to see the latest of Daimler AG’s drivetrains and mobility concepts? Well, then you’ve got to get yourself on a plane to China for this year’s Shanghai World Expo 2010. Daimler is set to hug the limelight with their latest urban driving innovations.

Dr. Thomas Weber, a member of the Daimler Board of Management for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, spoke on the company’s behalf, giving hints on what to expect in Shanghai. Certainly, Daimler will be flaunting their latest electric vehicles, but the cherry on the icing would be the ‘flex mover’ concept that is part of their mobility project. It’s Daimler’s offer for the future’s individual mobility needs.

Daimler is also set to showcase several other projects, namely the smart electric drive model in an exhibit entitled “Road of Solution,” and the car2go project to be housed in the Urban Planet Pavilion. They’ll also be teaming up with Nestle to bring 20 smart “Swiss taxis” for visitors. You can either register in advance online or just flag one down in the Expo.

Ulrich Walker, Daimler Northeast Asia Chairman and CEO, says their involvement is testament to their commitment to working with China in leading sustainable mobility.

Mercedes-Benz gets double for Q1 2010 in China

StarElite Brand Launch 715 295 540x222 Mercedes Benz gets double for Q1 2010 in China

It’s a very good year for Daimler AG as Mercedes-Benz sells more than double the units they sold in the first quarter of 2009. Sales shot up by 105% from January to March, with Mercedes-Benz becoming China’s most popular premium car brand.

Executive Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Cars Joachim Schmidt confirmed reports, and boasted their goal for 2010 which was to sell more than 100,000 passenger cars in China. This puts the country third on Mercedes-Benz’s largest markets list for 2010, trailing behind home-base Germany and the U.S. Back in 2009, China was a mere sixth.

As of the afternoon of April 23, 2010, Daimler AG stocks dropped by 0.56 percent, closing at $51.92. It previously closed at $52.21 the day before. It doesn’t bother the company though, after showing signs of recovery from last year. The automotive industry was in shambles last year, with two of Detroit’s Big Three car makers being forced into bankruptcy.

These latest developments puts Mercedes-Benz at a much favorable spot against its two main rivals in the premium car segment, fellow German car makers BMW and Audi. Now that they’ve penetrated China, Mercedes-Benz expects more growth with the introduction of limousines and multi-purpose vans.
